Haul Out for Hurricane or Leave in Slip?

I've gone over this problem many many times. The yard in Fajardo has better hurricane tie downs and better protection from winds than Del Rey. However, the thousands for named storm emergency haul out covers only ONE storm. After that, you are on your own. Additionally, if you haul out for the season, they charge you for FOUR months, even if you don't want to stay dry that long.

We decided to bite the expensive rip off bullet and stay tied down with chains to pads for the four months and rent a nearby condo so we could be close by.

Our policy as originally written had no haul-out provision. Discussion with the broker, carrier added a rider with a relatively small increase in policy cost, now they pay half of haul-out and/or moving expenses in a named storm.

Point is: maybe worth asking more about your options. And then maybe there are other insurance companies. (Unless there's an area-specific thing that they all do...)

I just want to answer a couple questions some of you have asked.

The marina will haul out and tie the boat down on the concrete slab but you have to tell them where you want the stands to go. They will not be responsible for where the stands are placed but will place the stands for you ,if that makes sense

Yes the $3000 is just for one haul out. If there's more than one haul out then you pony up again.

I read the insurance policy twice and there is no requirement for hauling out. It just asks that you have a named tropical storm plan filed and you have to indicate in whether the boat will be in water or hauled.

As far as "normal"storm surge in this area… I'm not sure. I'm relatively new to the area and I have been inquiring but can never really get a good straight answer. The marina is Puerto Del Rey and it's in a wide bay and there's a about 100,000 ft.² of mangrove on the southeast side of the marina and a huge stone and concrete reinforced breakwater in front of it

When I was a kid, may have been a hurricane or a noreaster. I recall pilings sticking out of the decks on boats in slips. The old mans boat was on the mooring. Another thing to consider.

Came from Miami and went through a number of hurricanes in a kinda surge protected marina - even there we got a lot of water but nothing like those who were more open -- as you stated the problem is the surge and it can be huge and quite serious -
would depend on how you would rig for it if you can - 10'-12' feet is a lot of water
maybe you answered your own question?
