I've never heard of the cabin sole being anything other than the "floor".

The deck of a cabin or cockpit.

SOLE - Cabin or saloon floor. Timber extensions on the bottom of the rudder. Also the molded fiberglass deck of a cockpit.

I could understand the logic if it refered to the deck sole. We visited HMS Victory a few months ago (commissioned in 18th Century) and the parts of the boat are labelled in the souvenir brochure - it shows the 'flooring' under foot as the 'sole'.

A Sole.. the floor inside a boat is therefore considered the equivalent.
But.. I could be wrong..

All set with blistering witty and correct response and TrentePieds comes up with the definitive. I can only add that floors are necessary to secure the frames(ribs) to the keel and keep the garboard seam from wandering open .

According to the Oxford Campanion to Ships & the Sea, edited by Peter Kemp and published 1978. "Sole, in some ships, and especially in yachts, the name given to the decks of the cabin and forecastle.".
"Ceiling, the inside planking or plating in holds of a merchant vessel, laid across the floors and carried up the sides of the holds to the level of the beams"
I could find no reference to the sole as referring to something overhead.

Also, "Deck, the horizontal platforms in ships which correspond to floors in houses."

Seems to me the inside cabin top has been called a cabin on overhead liner.

So, 'not much said to confirm my beliefs in the older terminology for sole and ceiling. This makes me think back to about fifty years ago in Annapolis where the wise "old salts" were telling the young me about the cabin sole being overhead and the bilge ceiling being underfoot.

Now you have me wondering if these old guys saw me walking toward the boat shed. Could they have been huddled together, snickering and hatching a plot? "Yeah, we'll make this young kid think he's walking on the ceiling under the sole!" ...'sort of like sending the young apprentice out to find a left-handed wrench. 'or maybe this was just local terms among boat builders in the Chesapeake.

Either way, as I said, I'm the one that needs to adapt.

And ceiling refers to the finished inside of the hull--not the overhead or headliner.

Been sailing 35 years and have never heard the floor called anything other than the sole. The wood lining on the inside of the hull is ceiling and the ceiling of the cabin was called the "overhead." Anything used to line it is called the headliner. At least as far as I ever knew......

Hello,
I guess it's the circle you sailed in. I been a professional Mariner, licensed for over 41 years. I've sailed with oars, sails, steam, motor, cycloidal drive. I never heard of sole. I've heard of deck, main deck, 01, 02 etc.
