Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

Maybe hijacking here (but only briefly) we are trying a head experiment. We bought an AirHead for one and built our own for another. The most expensive item was the separating toilet seat $126US. My husbands travelog so I haven't started using both because we both know he'w more full of sh.....sorry. The homebuilt one looks nice though.

Back to handy stuff for pocket cruisers.

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

When sailing through the PNW Islands I could never remember if it's a 10.0 high tide at 8:00 or a 8.0 at 10:00. Or if it was a 4.30 low tide at 2:30 or a 2.30 at 4:30. So I have a small dry erase board in view where I keep the days tides, times, slack, floods etc..Also use small clear plastic totes for all my sailing/tides/currents/cruising guides etc....

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

just posted this on other thread but I thought it is a good idea for cruising in areas where you are worried about drinking the water:
Expedition
It will pump out lots of bacteria-free water and it is very tough.

There's NO SUCH THING as good instant coffee.

I'm a bit of a coffee snob living here in Chiriqui Province, Panama, where some of the world's best coffee is grown.

Have to agree with you on that! With in-laws from Honduras, I have to hide the instant when they come to visit. They bring the coffee with them. Only "Cafe Oro" for them. Chiriqui is on the Costa Rica border right? I've been to Costa Rica but I missed going that far south, heard great things about that area though!

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

Chiriqui abuts the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. I live in a small pueblo (Boqueron) about 20 miles from the border. When you go up into the mountains past Volcan, Boquete, up to Sereno you pass miles and miles of coffee plantations.

There's a coffee variatel known as "Geisha" that is grown on a few plantations here. In fact, this year Chiriqui-grown Geisha brought in the highest prices for coffee grown anywhere in the world. (Well, except perhaps for the beans that are found in certain monkey's poop.)

I have to return to the States in a couple of months because of health problems and I'm going to take as much coffee along with me as I can.

Sign me up for a pound! Has that variety managed to dodge the fungus that is plaguing other areas?

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

The fungus is definitely a problem but so far not devastating the crops here.

Perhaps many have seen this but for those who have not, this is a neat little solar light. Light, waterproof, no batteries and will go all night. "Luci"

Well not to be argumentative but the one I saw had no way to put a battery in, and the info says:
"This extremely durable solar LED light is completely powered by the sun, no additional batteries needed. Set it in direct sunlight for 7 hours and Luci Outdoor lasts up to 12 hours on a single charge"
So it has a battery in there somewhere, and eventually the battery and LEDs will give up the ghost, but it seemed reasonable for the price.

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

We bought a rectangular plastic pump spayer from Harbor freight for 30.00
We fit it with a small hand sprayer wand that delivers more spay than the original.
Its 4 gallons so it might not heat great. But we will be in the sea of cortez with a dog, the extra water is welcome!

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

Bringing this one over from another thread:
good option for head,
SeaLand 711-M28 Gravity-Flush Toilet System
It is said the 9 gallon tank will hold as much as much bigger holding tank since it uses so much less water.

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

1) an old 12in PC laptop - sits on a shelf, plays movies and plugs into my Garmin to use like a chart plotter using PolarView and NOAA charts

2) Lock-n-Lock plastic ware for the cooler. Freeze individual portions. Stack & store well

3) LifeStraw water purifier - just in case the water runs out while you're holed up somewhere in bad weather

4) Diver's mask and flippers - so many uses, and they're fun too

5) Lee Valley picnic basket - holds all the plates, bowls and cutlery (looks like a tool bag)

6) Custom fit bug screen with weights to fit the companionway

Good grog, you wont need mix
