Guadeloupe: 1st time what to expect

Flying down to Guadeloupe this winter to meet up with some friends that are arriving via sailboat. I will be spending about a week on land and a week sailing in the area. I have never been and I'm not close to anyone who has 1st hand knowledge. Pictures look great, just don't know what to expect when it comes to food, drink and people. I'm not nerves about the week on the boat, just the week on land.
