Politics and guns? You forgot to mention the death penalty, abortion, religion and anchors!

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

I've said it more than once.

A Government Big Enough to Give You Everything, you WANT.

is, big enough to take everything you have.

lloyd,

now it seems they take when you don't give, and take when you do give

I don't think it's right to keep paying the legislature (who are NOT doing their jobs) and not pay, for example, the park rangers (who were doing their jobs).

Running this country is a responsibility, not a privilege. When the legislature is so ineffective as to not be able to do their job, I believe they should be forced to don orange jumpsuits and be confined to chambers until they get some results. During this period since the government is shut down, they will be allowed one shower per week, and fed a very austere diet. They will spend a minimum of 10 hours a day negotiating a solution, and 4 hours a day doing necessary chores. If in the rare occasion that the deadlock is not corrected after 45 days the courts will convene to decide if anyone is obstructing democracy. After 90 days (total) the offenders will face emergency elections. If they are replaced they will be declared enemies of the state, with all the customary benefits and privileges.

That should put an end to this nonsense, and keep things running smooth.

there is nothing democratic about it.

never was considered during formation of the paperworx for usa in 1776 and is not considered today as democracy. there is no such thing as functioning democracy.
unfortunately now th especial interests which run usa are corporations , no longer landowners. we are screwed. sorry folks, if you dont like it, look it up.
research before saying the usa is democracy anything--aint and never was intended to be democracy. rodlmao.
try constitutional republic.

fascism seems to be the trending thought process at present, and abuse is the practiced method of punishment for congress being elected..ditto president --as they continue their abuse of their alleged constituency.

Absolutely correct. The founders were just as weary of democracy as they were of monarchy.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner...

How so. I don't believe the Mayflower pilgrims , who were to some extent merely seeking freedom of expression from the Anglican Church , ever saw themselves other then Englishmen , many other nations also arrived in the US quickly thereafter , these were not Englishmen of course

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

many were scot..not english. some were dutch huguenots, and some from mainland europe. research the names of those who were on board. you will find my 8 ˇfamilies were NOT mainly english.
it is an insult to call a scot or an irishman or welshman english.

kimr--i try not to use the allegedly correct name in public.

Oh c'mon zee. While I might share some of your cynicism about who's manipulating the electoral system, the fact remains that your government representatives are selected based on receiving a majority of votes cast by the eligible voters. That's... democratic. Your constitutional republic is a democracy.

... which does mean that if enough people actually gave a crap, your government could be changed. It does seem these days, though, that if most people are getting by, and have a TV, and enough to eat... they don't give a crap... or they fear that any political change might take from their little hoard to go to someone else. The disparate political views expressed in CR are clear evidence of this.

That's the root problem, not whether there's actually democracy or not. The US has a democratic system with a cynical electorate and poor enough turnout that it can be easily gamed. Any group that's effective at mobilizing their supporters to vote can gain power. All democracies will suffer from this to some extent or other.

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

From Brietbart this am:

Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was "closed" due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown.
The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban. Of access to an ocean. The government will probably use more personnel and spend more resources to attempt to close the ocean, than it would in its normal course of business.
This is governing by temper-tantrum. It is on par with the government's ham-fisted attempts to close the DC WWII Memorial, an open-air public monument that is normally accessible 24 hours a day. By accessible I mean, you walk up to it. When you have finished reflecting, you then walk away for it.
At least that Memorial is an actual structure, with some kind of perimeter that can be fenced off. Florida Bay is the ocean. How, pray tell, do you "close" 1,100 square miles of ocean? Why would one even need to do so?
Apparently, according to an anonymous Park Service ranger, “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”
Centuries ago, King Canute famously failed to command the ocean tide to stop. His display was actually a means to educate his subjects on the limits of royal power. Today, however, our President actually believes he has the power to control the oceans.
