No... that was your employer taking tax off. Perhaps they didn't get the memo?

The United States is not a "presidential democracy;" we have a democratically elected republic form of government.... Which has morphed into a socialist democracy over the past 50 years.

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

The solution is simple, a constitutional ammendment specifying one year in prison for every member of congress for every day the government is shut down, regardless of party or the way they voted. That would put an end to this crap.

As a foreigner, I have no right to stick my nose into your affairs but ........ we (the rest of the world) are starting to think it might be time to follow the previous examples of the mighty USA.

So, we invent a catchy name like "Operation Working Democracy USA," form a coalition of like-minded countries, invade your country (directly at Washington and bypass Hawaii), stand down your politicians, pass some new laws so you DO have an effective working democracy, impose martial law for a couple of years, put your faulty leaders up against a court of law to analyse where they went wrong, punish them accordingly, retrain the general populace with modern thinking and expectations, call an election, supervise it closely to avoid trouble in Florida again and then withdraw to our countries after a job well done.

But then again, I am not a citizen of the USA, so it is none of my business! Although it is very funny...

At least you won't have to invent WMDs.

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

Oh, we have mechanisms to prevent deadlock. Vetos, majority overrules, court actions, we have plenty of options. The problem in the US right now is nothing to do with a deadlock, it is simply that the Republicans in Congress are throwing a **itfit because they don't like the implementation of the new national health plan, and they don't have enough VOTES to overrule it. Or the brains to have the courts block it--which they could have easily done.

This is about a large number of infants throwing a fit and walking off the job.

I'm in too.

Though thoroughly embarrassed by my elected children representatives.
My children have been beaten (with marks to prove it) for acting like this.
I wish there were a legal way to go to DC and do some caning.

Would you prefer to be greeted with flowers, or wine? We've got some decent domestics.

Actually, Jimbo, most of us would appreciate the offer, but we already have a PlanB. Remember, if the Federal Republic of the United States shuts down, there are still 50 sovereign states, which then would seem to be released from the Republic and free to operate on their own once again.

That would no doubt wreak havoc in Guam and Puerto Rico (not to mention DC) since they'd all be shut out in the cold and left as independent non-states, poor things. Probably be a lot of squabbling over who can grab the USVI first though, don't you think?

Since the Republic was founded to replace the Confederation, which was founded to repulse the British, deal with the Indians, and promote a common currency, we may not miss it much. The Brits have renounced colonialism (karma is a *itch, London isn't what it used to be at all now that the colonies have come home to roost), MasterCard and Visa have replaced "currency", and the Indians are having a ball taking the white man's money in the casinos while selling them discount cigarettes to die from.

So, who's gonna miss the Republic? (shrug)
