Be careful what you wish for. It might just happen.

Laudable, but at the moment cannot even do a back ground check due to the shutdown, which has somewhat impacted the private sector causing an unintended hiring freeze.

Interesting that the normally open 24/7/365 monuments in DC have been shut down at great expense to move in barriers with police while the golf course at Andrews AFB is open for the priveleged to use. Believe it is quite obvious that the administration has made it Federal policy to use the shut down as an excuse to make it as painfully unpleasant as they can.

You do know that Andrews is a military base, and that military facilities, even their golf courses, are exempt from the shutdown?

A few of the "priveleged":
Quote:
• Active and retired members of the Armed Forces and their family members
• Civilian employees working for the Federal Government and their dependent family members.
• Military, DoD civilians and their dependent family members.
Have you contacted your congressman/woman? What was your message to them?

It may be argues that in the absence of federal government, and the absence of the park rangers who ordinarily protect federal property, the duty falls to the federal militia to stand to and protect those same endangered sites like the Dry Tortugas.

So if you happen to meet the definitions as per 10 USC 311, feel free to go on active duty until and unless you can find a superior officer to take charge.

10 USC § 311 - Militia: composition and classes | Title 10 - Armed Forces | U.S. Code | LII / Legal Information Institute

10 USC 311: Militia composition and classes

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

Please note, this is not politics, this is a legal obligation placed on US citizens. We do in fact have compulsory "universal" service, as defined above. As the Militia serve the State and not the Government, a government shutdown makes no difference in the obligation to serve.

In 1974 the Aussiie federal govt came to a similar stand still. So they were all sacked by the Governor General (Queen Elizabeth's representative) and elections were called. Yes, the government was sacked by the representative of a foreigner.

Doesn't the USA have a similar process for sacking them all which should be triggered now?

Or will you do what Chile did in 1973?

Nice idea, load up and head for DT to protect the park.

But.....

There is a skeleton crew of park rangers there, I assume they fulfill that role, hence no criteria for supporting the militia.

Re: Govt Shutdown Impact on Boaters

No, you can't fire an elected official. In fact, you can't even jail a member of Congress if it will interfere with their job. All you can do is try to get them impeached and that can take a very long time, it is a judicial process. Well, that's not ALL you can do, but we haven't resorted to the other option since the 1770's and would prefer not to do so again.

Apparently when our current Constitution was written (this is our second form of national government, we dissolved the earlier Confederation, not to be confused with the Confederacy founded prior to our Civil War) our founding fathers never envisioned the concept that their successors would simply walk off the job.

I think we need to shift them from salary to wages, and make them all clock in and clock out in order to get paid. <VBG>

Dot-
You can certainly offer to assist them. Three means there's just one, times three shifts, to stand watch over an incredibly large area. And remember, they're just "administrative agents".

That's the thesis of this guy; that, among other advantage, parliamentary democracies like Australia, England, Canada, Germany etc have such mechanisms to prevent deadlock, but presidential democracies, where a separately elected president is pitted against an elected legislature, often don't.

Hey, if Congress wants to quit? Goodbye, let's hire a new one and lock 'em out. Refusing to work is misfeasance and malfeasance and those are grounds for termination.
