Nice to see that so many people appreciate their boats also this way.

Re: Got a painting of your boat? I just got an oil done!!

Well, it does not always work out so well!

A few years ago we met an acknowledged marine artist, a fellow who had done some magnificent oils of traditional ships, marine battles, etc, all first class work! As it happened, he was shifting genres, and had written a novel, a very long novel. My soft hearted Ann volunteered to do some editing on it, and spent a lot of time doing so. In return, he painted a nice sized boat portrait of Insatiable II. When the great day arrived, we drove to his abode to pick it up, quite excited.

It was ghastly. Our lovely boat was misshapen, lumpy, unrecognizable, displayed against a parody of a shore line, and sailing on a cardboard sea. Our social skills were sorely taxed with the effort to say something nice, and we left asap, before we just broke down and cried. I dunno what went wrong... he was pretty old, and I don't know how long it had been since he did the lovely earlier works. And the poor chap died a few months later, not knowing how disappointed we were, or that the painting never made it back to Oz to be displayed in the spot on our bulkhead we had reserved for it.

One day we willl succeed in getting a proper painting, until then we will envy those who have been successful.

Jim

Re: Got a painting of your boat? I just got an oil done!!

Someone painted our old boat without us even knowing about it. A friend told us about the painting being for sale in a nearby gallery.

Nice painting but at $3500 a bit steep for us.

Re: Got a painting of your boat? I just got an oil done!!

My wife asked an "artist" to paint my old boat for my birthday.

Looking at the painting it look like the guy wanted to commit suicide when he painted the thing. It looks very dark and tragic and the boat is a tiny black dot... We were so disapointed...

Re: Got a painting of your boat? I just got an oil done!!

I don't have a painting of my boat, but I did kind of the reverse -- named her after a lithograph printed by my great-great grandfather's lithography company back in 1895 or so. The image is a label for a tobacco company. It was common back then for the Virginia tobacco companies to commission ornate labels for their products.

I framed and mounted the lithograph on the bulkhead in the saloon.

Jim that such a sad story!
But I can'T help but wonder if the value of that painting might have gone up after the artists death. It was likely the last painting he ever did. Somewhere there is probably a true believer and collector who would have snatched that painting up and loved all the ugly!
