Good Insurance Company ?!?!

Aloha All

CF is a great source of information of all kinds. As I am boat shopping I use CF all the time, thank you to all that contribute .

I thought it would make for a good thread to list cruisers opinions on the insurance companies that they use. Feel free to list pricing, coverage and cruising grounds this is a place where we can all save money. If you don't want to put your personal finance info out their just use %. If you have used a company that you don't recommend let us know but please be nice.

Hopefully this will make for a good list that we can all benefit from.

Good insurance company?
Not Progressive ... inexperienced adjustors, difficult to work with, slow to pay claims.

Re: Good Insurance Company ?!?!

We also use Pantaenius and have for several years though we've never filed a claim. However, we did meet a cruising couple who lost their mast as they were approaching the Galopagos Islands. They returned to Ecuador where they wound up staying for a significant amount of time, with Pantaenius covering their expenses. When their new mast finally arrived, Pantaenius sent over two riggers from the UK to install it as they were concerned that there wasn't skilled riggers in Ecuador to do the job.

Whereas this is an interesting anecdote, we have found them to be very responsive in all of our communications. However, we do not find them to be inexpensive and for some of our blue water passages our premiums can approach US$6,000 annually for a 27 year-old boat. Granted, we have fairly comprehensive coverage that includes our dinghy and outboard. They have been very quick to send us credit when we've arrived in a port where we'll be staying for a long period of time.

Fair wind and calm seas.

For insurance companies, a big vote for Markel....

For insurance brokers, another big vote for IMIS in Grasonville, MD....I've been a satisfied customer for the past 6 years....

I just renewed my insurance Monday. I have Markel though IMS and have had them for 5 years and 2 boats. I also got a quote via Boat US twice now and they were 2.5 times more.

Re: Good Insurance Company ?!?!

Our agent has been Blue Water (out of Jupiter FL) for years. They also have a west coast office. They write coverage for boats going to Cuba, Haiti and Columbia. They also get passage making and offshore boats kept out of the US. Very nice people. They have placed our policies with several companies, Lloyds, La Reunion (France) and Lemma (now bankrupt). We have never had to make a claim in 17 years so I can’t comment on how well claims get handled.

We pay about $4500/yr for $160,000 hull value with $500,000 liability and tender, uninsured boater and some medical and personal effects coverage. 28 year old boat.

Re: Good Insurance Company ?!?!

I just changed from Acadia to Pantenius. Better, more comprehensive coverage, bigger cruising area and $600 less expensive. I do not like dealing with agents. I have always used Amica(no agents) for everything but they do not endorse live-aboard. I went with a local agent that set me up with Acadia and I have been paying a premium for lousy service from the agent. No complaints other than price from Acadia but I also never had a claim.

Exactly what is the purpose of an agent these days anyway?

Hmm...I have had the opposite experience with Progressive. I go thru a broker, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

You should have an agent who can write all the best insurance plans. If the agent is good they will always be moving you to the best price/fit for where you are cruising. If you are not moving around a lot then this is less important.
