Ginger to Cure Sea Sickness

Anyone have any personal experiences with crystallized ginger use to protect from nausea? Please tell!

Yes. My first day out I am proned to have a little sea sickness. I avoid alcohol, eat little or light and have the ginger and it works for me. Them I am good for the remainder of the trip. If I don't have the crystallized ginger, I will eat little slices of fresh ginger -- spicy but it works.

I assume the organic crystallized ginger would work best? Like a trader joes type product... I unfortunately have been fighting nausea for years out in the ocean, and have settled on dremamine, which does a number on my alertness, as you can imagine.

I am going out for a couple day sails soon, Im hoping this all-natural alternative proves successful!

sweet cryalised ginger is very good, as is the fresh product, but many cant handle it. IrishLass has it, before you go , eat light, avoid fatty foods and alcohol, then ginger is generally quite effective. Mind you I did sail with several people, who were very prone to seasickness, ginger in this case didnt seem enough and it took fairtly powerful drugs to control it. ( cinarzine)

I don't know if the organic is any better or not ..... or if they just get to charge more. LOL But, that insidious nausea is such a bad feeling, I know. I don't like to take the dramamine either. I hope the ginger works for you .... it is certain to give you fresh breath and .... maybe for your first night out, take along some Thai Ginger Basil Soup. Bon Voyage

Interesting about ginger. I sometimes eat crystalised ginger but don't know if it stops seasick feelings as usually I don't get sick. However, my wife reckons the ginger tablets she takes does help her.

The first I ever heard about ginger stopping seasickness was about 25 years ago when I was up in the mountains in the Solomon Islands for a few months in a thatched hut. A local bloke who could speak English pointed out a very large ginger plant. He said he was a 'bush' person and not a 'sea' person and so did not like going in boats, but if he had to travel across water, he would dig up the root of the plant and eat some of it. And no seasickness. Wow, raw ginger root! Nowadays it is fairly common knowledge that ginger helps.

I don't know how effective is crystallised ginger, but down the road a half day is Buderim Ginger Factory which uses local ginger, supposed to be some of the best in the world, to make a range of commercial products. I enjoy their crystallised ginger. They have one type with a touch of chili in it as well, so hot and sweet, I can't eat too much of that one.

Be interesting to hear your feedback after you have tried a few products.

MythBusters did a very intersting trial, I beleive of all , the Ginger was best.

I think Crystalised Ginger may be a tad over the top in sugar for it to be effective.... what you want is Ginger Nuts.... biscuits.... cookies for non-English speakers... (Thats supposed to be joke...)
Another thing that works well is fizzy drinks... gets ya burping n thins the acids...

As Boatman suggests ....there are some carbonated ginger beer's (non-alcoholic) that have a VERY high ginger content. They are much more potent than our (American) typical ginger ale. That might be a good choice. I have thought of trying them myself. I think you can find them at the ethnic -- Asian and Carribean -- markets.

Fortunately, we have not yet had a sea sickness problem (although I am sure it will eventually happen ... aaarrghh!).

I usually try some ginger capsules from the Vitamin Shoppe a few days before I set out ... seems to help. I have also taken along some Ginger Tea (Yogi brand) and it has a very soothing effect.

Been fighting mal de mer for years, I found Traditional Medicinals Organic Ginger Aid. Comes in a tea Bag so I just keep one in my water bottle and sip continuously while underway. About 90% effective, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I also nibble on a little Papaya Enzyme. Dave

I like ginger snaps. But if I am worried about motion sickness, generally powerboating, I use scopolomine patches. 10/$20. works everytime.
