Re: Gift Ideas for Sailors

I gave one of these as a gift to a relative who camps:
Iris 50 compass - Handbearing compasses - Compasses, Electronics & Navigation | Plastimo
I received one as a gift shortly after...I love it, I consider it precious and practical.

Also, a good flashlight is always nice, something that fits in your pocket but has a lot of lumens. You can never have enough flashlights.

What would you get for your sailor friends and what would you like to receive as sailors?

Re: Gift Ideas for Sailors

I've already had to deal with a number of things that other people gave us thinking we needed it on our boat. Well meaning people, but clueless. I hate throwing away gifts, but I can's store stuff we have no need for or intention of using. Artwork would come into that. As for technical stuff, I really like to pick my own. Someone recently gave me a Garmin GPS, for example. I quit buying Garmin products when they stopped exporting and moved their production to China. So someone wasted a few hundred bucks.

I think that if you don't know specifically of something that someone needs, it's best to keep it small and unobtrusive. I think jewelry, or high quality knives, or a gift certificate to West Marine/Bass Pro/etc. would work for cranky old curmudgeons like me.

Tell ya what, just email me the password to your Amazon acct. ( great gift certif. place btw) I'll take care of it for you.

Re: Gift Ideas for Sailors

Because we are trying to clear out our house in preparation for moving on the boat I asked people a year ago to stop giving us gifts of stuff. I am happy with no gift at all, but if someone feels that they just must, we prefer gift cards. Pretty much any kind of gift cards; restaurants, Amazon, movies, West Marine, Bass Pro, gas stations anywhere. They can help a cruiser stretch their budget, get the gear that they need as opposed to the gear you think they might like, or enjoy some luxuries they might otherwise pass on.

I agree 100% with Canibul, if someone hasn't told you specifically that they want or need something, I wouldn't assume that they have room for it or would use it just because it is an item either made for a boat, or sold in a chandlery. I would ask for a wish list from the intended gift recipient. If they won't provide one I would go with gift cards.

Re: Gift Ideas for Sailors

If anyone feels they MUST give me a gift I'll take an Island Packet 485 or a Nauticat 515. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Might pay for folks to listen to their friends closely they may find the right answer. Not dropped as a hint, more like bitching about something they don't have or need to replace. I got a nice compass that way. I don't even remember saying the boat came with a piece of junk.
