Getting Too Fat to Sail

Still two years and 20 days to retirement (with the blessing), and here I am in China where the food is so good I'm eating waaaay too much. It's funny, but when I sail I don't lose weight but the pot belly certainly retreats. So what is it about sailing that gets me slimmer, the non-horizontal exercise or my lousy cooking?

Wish I was sailing

Re: Getting too fat to sail

It's the boat motion that causes the belly fat to be thrown out to various other parts of your body. That's why when I first get to the boat I wonder why they made the doors so narrow because I have to turn sideways to get though it, then after a couple of days I fit though the door, but my fingers are fat!

Its called the "vanity response". The brain KNOWS you want to look better for the opposite sex, so it controls where the calories go to rest.
Anyway, thats my story, and I'm sticking with it.

Eat the chinese food but skip the rice...

Westerners tend to load up way too much on the carbs.

If you can't resist limit yourself to a measured cup of cooked white rice. Stay away from fried rice.

Like I'm giving advice - jeesh.

I gain weight when I go the the US. Gained 6 kilos over the holidays. You oughtta see me waddle around the foredeck...

Re: Getting too fat to sail

For me, raising the main is good for the waistline, not to mention getting the kinks out of my back!
The halyard has a 2:1 purchase so that's quite a bit of "doing the twist" to get that sail all the way up.
I try my best to use the winch only for the last few inches.

I was down in Cabo years ago and I saw Burl Ives sailing along the beach in a Flicka - he filled up the entire cockpit! He had a beer parked on his belly and a big cigar hanging off his lip! He was happy as a clam!

Re: Getting Too Fat to Sail

It's the fact that on a boat you have a much less sedentary life than one typically has on land. On a per hour basis over a period of 24 hours, you are burning more calories.

People also tend to eat more when they are bored....like on land.

Re: Getting Too Fat to Sail

I would think that the rocking of the boat would provide un-ending resistance exercise. in my case thats what i am hoping for. :-P

Re: Getting Too Fat to Sail

I'm thinking more along the lines of a telescoping mast system,,like the Periscope on a SSN...
