Free 32' Trojan in the Portland, OR area. Needs work, but all original apparently.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Went to look at an Ericson 31 yesterday. Shes listed at $1500, and has a major oil leak stated in the listing. In addition my findings are; Bearing/ shims needed in box steering mechanism. In that same area, there is some sort of spray foam repair that was done by the previous owner that this one says he didn't know about. What I see there is some bad repairs to holes with regular plywood and spray foam. Both hatches need (imo) replacing as they do not shut tight and are missing parts. Portlights are not in the best shape. Grab rails and cleats were recently rebeded (correctly or not) recently and all the hardware is wrong/ different lengths. Recent headliner installed incorrectly. (but that doesn't really matter since the grab rail hardware will eventually poke through due to it being too long) The head... smells SOOOO bad! I had to open hatches and let the breeze blow through to be able to look around in the forward berth. Personally I would replace all the hoses, pumps at a minimum, or new head altogether. You wouldn't be able to be below decks on a hot July night otherwise.Electrical systems could use updating/ upgrading. Decks are all solid. Standing rigging looks passable. I didn't check the sails. Gel coat needs a lot of attention, and the repairs made to the hull with calking (?) would need to be fixed the right way. Her overall condition, imo, is good and worth the asking price. I may make my offer, but the owner is in a rush and I don't rush buy anything. Sorry no video! Next boat I promise!

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Oh I am, most people would say I'm foolhardy in my current life situation to consider sailing at all.

I definitely have neither the skills nor the money to maintain a wooden boat, especially one with a cheap purchase price.

Maybe after finding I can do so with a classic plastic, improved finances and skillset I'd take on learning woodworking as "the next level" if I fall in love with an old wood boat.

That could be a good deal for someone, especially in shallow water:
Pearson 40

Re: FREE, or close to free!

I asked the Pearson owner if they could give me a ball park of what kind of $$ they are looking for. Could be a good deal, could be way out of line. I hate when they put the $1 in the listing.

That one is priced pretty well. You don't have to be a shipwright to own a wood boat either. Tech has come a LONG way! Matter of fact the market for traditional built boats seems to be growing, and that's great for wood boat owners! The more the market grows, the better the tech, the cheaper the cost to own. Even a fiberglass boat will go to **** if it's not kept up.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

A free boat was offered to me last month. It's not free anymore as I had to pay 800€ for the freight to another location .It's 29' long keeled sailboat. Never seen it yet but my friend told it looked ok. Got to go and strip parts some weekend..
