Re: FREE, or close to free!

I'd like to use "sailboatlistings. com" but the fact that they don't limit the amount of time a posting can be up, or let you filter by date is so annoying!!! anyone have other listing sites that work well? Sailingtexas. com?

Check out this clean little boat in southern Ca, she's actually appears to be in really good shape.

The Cal 28 is also a good choice! (That’s the 25.)

I owned and sailed one of these...and it was an excellent boat. The only surprise was that it sailed much faster than I expected. A very fast boat. And yes, I paid $1,000 for it, sight unseen. Money well spent. It was great.

And of course the famous couple Dave and JaJa sailed one of these around the world. Dave started out on his own, but had a wife and three kids along the way. Yes, one was actually born on the boat while at sea. Same boat.

You know one can find a decent old boat without breaking the bank.

Time, tools, some DIY experience and enthusiasm, free space to store it, a good line on parts and equipment at decent prices, and some money, but more importantly, a dream, are what are needed to bring any old boat back to life.

Actually I should amend that, a friend or two or three to help with turning a wrench or lifting a mast, or just to bounce ideas off of, or to enjoy the successes with, help a lot too...
and a supportive family!

Now as to which boats are "worth it" that is not just a matter of taste, but the purpose for the boat. If I had been planning to sail to Hawaii I would have leaned more toward something like a Cal 28... going up the coast bashing to windward... probably a Columbia 38 deep keel version....
