FREE, or close to free!

This is a sweet looking international folkboat.

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/b...560268809.html

It needs work, as seen in the description. I like it though because of the sturdy rudder and keel design. Somebody’s “Atom” inspired voyage could start here. Also from the Crowley’s Yacht Yard folks that I’ve interacted with, they are good folks. I also was attracted to this boat because the damage seems to be to cabinetry and such, which I feel more confident repairing than, say, a diesel motor.

I'd REALLY want to see if the fiberglass was at all affected by the fire though!

True facts. You’d have to look to be sure but this one is fresh on c-list and looking so fine. There’s something about a blue water capable boat that captures my fancy. And yes, it’s the sailor not the boat and so on, but if I had my first boat purchase to do over, starting out on a blue water boat would be pretty cool. I think this one will sell fast.

On the plus side it does include a dinghy.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

This Catalina looks like a boat that was loved and cared for by her owner. In great shape. Owner is in his eighties now, so the family is trying to sell it. $7500, obo

Re: FREE, or close to free!

These are great boats. Sail beautifully and easy to single hand. The cockpit is a little small, but I guess thats because of how much room there is below. Some new inboard parts and a new main.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Oy Vey! This nearly free boat would seriously end up costing time and loads of money if there is more hidden issues like this. I've seen some doosies! A cabin with the inbaord diesel sitting in the middle of the floor in two feet of gookie standing water. Soooo may boats with heavy keel damage. One that had a stringer split wide open from my best guess, the wood (plywood?) inside being wet and then freezing. You REALLY have to crawl around in some of these to find the issues, and if you do get into it, and everything looks good, go look again and bring an extra pair of eyes who might see something you missed! Researching for known issues ahead of time helps a lot too.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Even a free boat's worth spend a boat buck on a proper survey.

Even more needed in fact.

If you think you can't afford a survey, you can't afford a free boat.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

There is a regular eBay seller called Boat Angel that sells donated boats, often in very good shape, perhaps needing a motor or other work. I've seen many go for a virtual song.

Unfortunately for me most of them are in the Northeast or west coast.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Someone in the SF Bay Area may want to check this one. It's an Olle Enderlein design (designer of Hallberg Rassy and Marieholm and others.) Shipman is a Swedish company it seems though I confess I hadn't heard of it. I would GUESS the construction is good on these, but I don't know for sure. To my eye it has potential.
