To be fair, I don't believe he's actually selling anything that you can get free elsewhere. He is selling separately the GPS hockey puck for around $80, which means that you would be paying only about $20 for his work in getting all the charts, software, reference materials, etc. on a usable DVD with all the interfaces, etc. organized for a true plug and play system.

I'd say that's a pretty good deal. One that I am definitely considering.

There's a great ENC reader available for Mac called (not surprisingly) MacENC
The company that makes it also makes an alternative called GPSNavX which handles actual navigation a bit better, with raster charts, AIS, etc.

I used the demo mode of MacENC to print off some specific areas from ENC charts and found it really easy to use. I've seen it in use on an older iMac on board a cruising boat.

Even more interestingly, there is a version now for the iPhone and iPad.
