Re: Forum Member's boat and daughter in trouble off of Mexico
I can't see how anyone is speculating right now. The only info is sick baby and maybe no gas. Lets all hope and pray for their safe return. Let them get back to a healthy state physically and mentally and then if he chooses let Rebel Heart share his story with us. I know as a Father I would be a semi-controlled mess right now and the last thing I would want to see is a bunch of criticism about my family and child from someone that has no idea what was going on.
God bless Rebel Heart and his family.

I don't know, I don't have kids. But I do know family comes first, even if it isn't quite life or death situations.
So I don't think its quite so cut and dry even if the boat is okay, which I sorta suspect it might be. The media has a way of hyping up situations. I'm wondering if "discovered the boat has no steering" was because they were out of gas and in very light airs or maybe the vane wasn't working in light airs, etc.
But all of that is just my conjecture. I hope we eventually get a full account and I certainly hope the poor baby comes through fine.

very good points. Now that we know the baby is stable, I am looking forward to a clear answer on the boat status so all the guesses can be cleared up.

in my experince kids can get sick very fast, but they also get well very quickly.
i hope this has a happy ending and if they do have to abandon, they can find a way of leaving their gps locator running, which will make recovery much easier.

Re: Forum Member's boat and daughter in trouble off of Mexico
Huge bummer for them. I follow their blog as well. Very inspirational and I've always loved how Eric sort of focuses on the sailing aspect and Charlotte really keeps it real with the living aspect, and doesn't sugar coat it.
I can't speculate about their decisions at all, but I agree with others here that Rebel Heart always seemed well prepared and competent. Wishing them all the best.

I know lots of folks have done it, but I have extensive first hand experience offshore and with young children onboard. It is not possible for a husband wife team to insure a safe passage under these circumstances.

This is not helpful.
Eric is one if the more skilled posters here, one of the top 20 or so that I really respect. This is no time for opinions. Let's not hear a peep from the peanut gallery on this one,

Re: Forum Member's boat and daughter in trouble off of Mexico
From Charlotte's blog:
Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 10:05
Six days at sea. In six days I can’t possibly describe the range of emotions I have felt so far: anger, joy, sickness, exhaustion, exhilaration, wonder, awe, contentment, peace. When we were backing out of our slip in La Cruz, we four stood in the cockpit waving goodbye to friends. Cora shook her head and furled her eyebrows, sighing, “I’m going to miss Sacha.” “I’m sure he’ll miss you too, buddy. You’ll see him again.” “I’m going to miss Sacha so much. And Diego. And Michelle (Michelle Williams, if you are reading this!) I hope see Appa out there when we are crossing the ocean too. I like them. They are my best friends.” The kid just melts me. Today at lunch, she bit into a pickle and did the same thing, a deep, resonant sigh, and then, “I miss Sacha. And I miss Colin, too. He is my friend.” And then she perked up and grabbed her tuna melt. “But I like this trip mommy, I like it a lot.” “Well, that’s good, because we have a long way to go still.” Lyra is absolutely the most challenging part of the trip. And Lyra, if you are reading this someday, know that we don’t mean you were a “bad baby,” or anything of the sort. You’re a wonderfully active, happy, ingenuitive (ßis that an actual word?) child. You are vocal, and curious, and BUSY, just as you should be. WE are the nutballs who decided to set to sea with you. Trust me, we have no one else to blame for bringing a 13 month old to sea than ourselves. I keep telling myself that Bora Bora will be worth it, worth what I’m now calling ‘extreme parenting.’

I know you've "been there, done that" and my hopes for Eric is he will be able to make the best out of his current situation. He wisely chose to singlehand from San Diego to the Sea of Cortez while Char was pregnant and while in Baja during the hot season set her up in an A/C apartment. I know his plans was to sail as a family, but maybe untill the youngest is a bit older, he might consider the Pacific leg solo and meet up with the family in NZ, or maybe sail with his oldest daughter.

After boatman's trip discussion, speculation is just wasteful. Best wishes to all and a happy ending. What they will do, how they got there, what happened to Lyra is ALL unknown at this point in time.
Be positive, don't finger point, and be PATIENT.
Please.

Hats off to the US Coast Guard, National Guard!! The best in the world!!! I thought they only had a 100-200 mile range. Very impressed.

Yes pray heaps. Perhaps Noah will heave up alongside and send a few of those 100 y/o sons over to put things right on board.

I just didn't know my "bailout" plan I advised would be the US taxpayer.
I told him to consider the Galapagos as an intermediate goal with the option to return to central or South America if things didn't go well.
