Fishing rigs

What do y'all (rods/reels/line weight/lure type) use during a crossing to catch fish? I'm familiar with inshore stuff but am setting off for Mexico (Isla Mujeres) next week and would love to catch some fresh dinner.

I used a Penn 6/0 reel with 50# or 60# line (working for the table, not sportfishing) and “Tuna Tango” type lures.

Haven't tried them myself. But have heard cedar plugs and the likes work well.

We have used cedar plugs, natural, red, and blue since we left Cape Fear. We catch fish almost everytime the plugs are out and have caught, Black fintuna, spanish mackrel, king makrel, wahoo, barracuda.....

We use one cuban reel and 3 penn senators with 100 pound test. These trail about 65 feet back in our wake on the surface and always get action.

Fishing adds fun in a passage as well as good food.

That covers reel, line and lures. How about rods. For storage purposes do you have short rods? Are they two piece rods? What brand?

I paid about $100 in 1992.

Also had some freshwater gear:
Mitchel Level Winder, and a Daiwa Spin Caster.
oh - and a couple of hand lines.

Makai has Shakespear rods which are about 5 feet long. We store them in a rod hold mounted to the underside of the bimini.

The Cuban reel has no rod and is stored in a bad in the cockpit storage.

We have also see several boats with no roads jus the reel clamped to the push pulpit. I like the rods better as we can walk them around the boat while working the fish in.

We bought the rods and reels as combos and if I remember I don't beleive we paid over 80 US each at Sports Authority.
