How do you know it wasn’t taken as a tax and redistributed to someone in need?

These people need money to live and pay bills, since they are now on the water, it would make sense they would target other boats no?
I am just thinking out loud here.
So in theory, the more free boats are out there, and the poorer society becomes, the higher boat crime will grow.

Re: First Thief Experience

Glad things worked out for Sailorboy1, but I’m somewhat disturbed by all this bluster about guns. Good grief, it’s only stuff. Maybe worth a few bruises, but not worth killing or dying over. I don’t really find that I need to own any item that’s worth more than a couple kilobucks. And I keep a few kilobucks socked away.
Well, except for maybe the boat as a whole, and even that is deliberately a cheap old boat that I could swim away from and start over, if need be.

One of my former roommates is really the zenmaster at this though. He used to have the cheapest Datsun ever made - no options whatsoever. Grinding up the streets in Seattle, we would be passed by three-wheeled ice-cream carts. It was so pathetic, one night, thieves broke into the car and installed a stereo

Our Chihuahua would let us know if someone got too close or lingered too long next to the boat (just walking down the dock he would ignore you)...only real incident was a drunk guy stopped to look at the boat and Diego scared the pee out of him with his barking and the guy fell and grabbed the standing rigging to avoid falling in.

I've done the naked chase but it was land based and I grabbed the decorative broadsword off the hallway wall as I charged downstairs. Never caught him but Tammy's on the phone to 911 and as I come back into the bedroom, she's explaining to the police that the naked guy with a broadsword lives here.

I worry about some of you and some of the posts remind me why.

It might be worth it to keep a very loud air horn handy at night. Probably scare the crap out of someone, and wake the dead.

Yep, like taking a knife to a gunfight. Florida is a stand your ground state. All you need to say is "he charged and the gun went off". Take the fifth after that.

Moreso than say Brunswick, just cause the neighborhood near the Marina in Brunswick leaves something to be desired
I understand what you saying about the neighborhood around Brunswick, GA. However, we spent 3 terrific years there with no issues at all! Any liveaboard at Brunswick can attest to that. We love Brunswick Landing Marina!

Far more practical than a paint gun. Attacking the potentialy armed thiefs with a paint ball gun is just putting your life at risk over some replacable property.

We have an alarm system on the boat that is triggered by weight on the deck or swim step. I added a long wire with a pull apart fitting on the end that can be threaded onto the dinghy/engine. If the pull apart is broken then the loud alarm and decks lights go on.

Very rarely use the dinghy wire setup. The deck alarm gets used in some areas we've cruised.

About the time we left last year there were beginning to be issues, things stolen off of boats, usually small stuff like gas cans, and there was at least one face to face incident on our dock with local “kids”.
Perhaps they have gone away, they were installing cameras on each dock.
I think they are eventually going to have to go to locked gates, using the same key card you need to get into the bathrooms and clubhouse.
Not to pick, but think about it for just a second, the bathroom is secured, but the docks aren’t?

I’ve lived there too, and likely will again if Ralph will let me after this post
