There was a new one released in the last year or two and cant remember the name as I need to see it.. Anyone? Also Triangle is a reasonably new one. Kinda scary like the kidman one with lots of dead bodies.. but sailing all the same for the first part.

Most favored is Mutiny On The Bounty, the 1935 version with Cark Gable as Fletcher Christian and Charles Laughton as Capt Bligh. Real heavy weather sailing too. Captain Courageous comes in as 2nd. Capt Ron is a hoot which comes in 3rd. Waterworld...comes in as a distant 4th but only for the sailing scenes and the phantasmagorical systems he had on the boat which would be the dream of any sailor. I mean, who wouldn't want a remote controlled heat seeking high powered spear gun?

I like most of the listed movies but Master and Commander should be there.
My stand out favorites are two TV series though, "The Onedin Line" as an adult and "Adventures in Paradise" as a youngster when TV finally came to Oz.
The South Pacific changed, so did I but I still remember the dreams Michener, Gaugin etc inspired.

As for liking Michener you should read Heyerdahl's Fatu Hiva for perspective. Michener embellished quite a lot. He interposed fiction with fact, a basis for all his novels.

No disagreeing here as to the fiction in Michener's tales but I was referring to the influence he had on the dreams of a 12yo boy sailing home made tin canoes [with outrigger of 5gal oil drums] on Botany Bay at that time.

The reality of the world outside had not yet been felt, that came a few years later in SE Asia.

As to Heyerdahl's perspective, that is another story and there are as many 'realities' as there are socio-economic lenses to view the subject through.

As a lad I was just as interested in the navigational works of Harold Gatty and Andrew Sharp et al. as the 'romantic' writers.

Here is a post worthy of logging back in. My apologies if it seemed I was dissuading one from their dreams. Your story of a young boy reminds me of some of my own. If you found Michener to be an inspiration towards capturing a dream more power to ya.

My inspiration was the men around me, my dad and his buddy divers. Among other notable achievements he swam between Maui and Oahu along with the Hawaiians and free dived for black coral off Maui. Ricky Grigg, later of Scripps and always Matthew Fontaine Maury were some more illustrious role models.

I first regularly dove SCUBA at age 10. By 14 I was NAUI certified for open ocean. I know, too young for the requirements but then as now it's who you know. Ron and Valerie Taylor were regulars at our dinner table. Growing up like that presented a myriad of personalities each of which contributed as role models.

Don't let anyone extinguish your dreams.

Sorry about SE Asia. That was hard on a lot of people as you probably well know.
