Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

To hear the first body has been confirmed to be the daughter is absolutely heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers go to the family.

Not sure what that means but in a sailboat, in what sounds like breaking, short period, 6' seas, if they had no propulsion or steerage, a drogue or para-anchor would be needed to keep her oriented to the oncoming waves. Without some way to control the boat and keep her from going beam-on to the waves, she'll be continuously smacked broadside, which of course is very dangerous in steep seas.

DL.....When I posted that....I was suggesting turning for a better ride BEFORE all that happens......and it IS better on some points if you have that control in most cases.....

Sure...a bazillion "what ifs" and the guy "might no have that kind of experience"......

My point was that if the Gulf is so snotty (believe me there are many places that will rock your socks in 6 footers) at that point, why continue to the point of major failures?....and I posted " in your right mind"....

The research is firm, one ounce of alcohol will impair a person. Does not take much to affect judgement and motor coordination. Sure, a lot of folks "function" ok even after several drinks; but in reality they are under the influence. For split second decision making and body movements, any alcohol will slow things down.

But your are correct, some folks go through life drunk and get away with it; even airline pilots at work. Guess it comes down to "do I feel lucky?"

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

on the way to lunch I heard a blurb on news that last night they saw a flare but could not find the source. Looks like there is still hope for the remaining three. If they have jackets on like the girl then maybe we will get lucky.

fingers crossed....

Hope so as well but doesn't the hypothermia kick in? guessing that that is what led to the girl's fate, since she had a vest on

How did this get into an alcohol discussion?

Sounds like bad situation and that is it.

I'm not an expert but I don't think so.
The water is about 85F at this time of year.
Maybe dehydration?

I'm holding out hope that the remaining family members are linked together and bobbing uncomfortably, but alive. Sending prayers and positive thoughts to this family and the USCG.

Takes a very long time to go hypothermic in warm water, but it can be done. A diver died of hypothermia in Belize once after 48 hours in the water. Small build female diver so less body mass...similar to kids.

Without a PFD it is very strenuous to tread water for an extended time, esp in rough seas. Drowning from exhaustion becomes very likely.

Either of these events would likely occurr before death by dehydration.

Re: Father and his kids missing at sea

Dehydration could be very real and cause death through doing incorrect things to survive...such as causing hallucinations or similar.

If they were getting beat up and sea sick, plus being dehydrated from numerous other reasons such as poor hydration prior to events for quite sometime, then the sea sickness, then the immersion and salt ingestion....etc, etc....

Hypothermia is possible in warmer waters if the air was cool at night and the wave action kept the surface temp to near air temp.

They narrow the search area based on what they found so far... and follow currents
