Clipper Race Fatality

Another clipper race fatality on the same boat as the previous one this year. So sad.

FATALITY STATEMENT - SARAH YOUNG

The woman was not tied in while in the cockpit and fell overboard. By the time they got her she was dead.

What a horrible experience for the team and her family.

Re: Clipper Race Fatality

It is very scary that it appear she was wearing a AIS locator and yet the boat was not able to pick her up in time. I am wondering how long did it take from the time she fell to the time the boat found her.

Now they have to decide whether they head towards Japan or Hawaii. Either way they have a long way to go before they can get the support with the transport of the body.

Re: Clipper Race Fatality

It seems like she was in the water for over an hour before they found her, based on the times in the article. No visual when she went over, and that was that. Very sad.

Re: Clipper Race Fatality

Very sad news.

Its a worry that she was swept out under the lifelines according to the report. She shounded like a very capable woman. Big wide and shallow cockpits with not much protection by the looks of them.

That is very sad but also odd:

"Sarah Young, 40, had been tidying the yacht's cockpit during gale-force winds at the back of the boat when she was hit by the wave."

She was tidying the boat with 40k winds and bad seas?

Maybe a 1 Avril prank but if it is the case a bad taste one, since somebody had already died on that race.

Hmm, perhaps not the time to point fingers, after all one of our own has just lost her life.

40kts and seas don't mean you leave ropes washing around the cockpit.. I doubt she was clearing the champagne glasses and snacks away.. if you've been there you'll know.. things happen.

Not tethered, swept overboard

Quote:
Sarah Young, who turned 40 just before setting sail from the capital in August, was swept overboard while sailing in the Pacific Ocean during the Clipper Race.

It had long been an ambition of keen adventurer Ms Young, who owned a personal lifestyle company, to take part in the prestigious race.

Ms Young was one of the crew aboard the IchorCoal boat, and was tidying the cockpit in strong winds, when she was struck by a wave earlier today.

She fell back toward the guard wire and was swept under it by another wave and was swept away.

Ms Young, who was not tethered to the yacht, died in the mid-north Pacific at around 1.44pm UK time on Friday, as the boat sailed from Qingdao in China to Seattle, in America.
