Fat, Out-of-Shape Sailors

All I see in mags and blogs are good looking heathly people! My wife commented the other day if we will allowed into anchorage etc. or whether there "special" sections for people like us. Will we have to fly any special flag to to mark us.

It may not be pretty, but maybe photos are needed so I feel I'm not wasting my time and money on the cruising/sailing dream.

Doesn't matter what you look like...

Its all about the size of your boat ...

And you are looking sexy in your Hunter,so keep smiling.

Nah. It's the number of spreaders. I know a gal who won't date anyone whose rig hasn't got at least three.

And we're talking sloops here.

It might help if the chef served grilled mahi mahi over salad instead of lamb and potato chips,,, I can have a talk with him if you like

Re: fat, out of shape sailors

We only started sailing less than two years ago . My weight was 125kg at 6ft 2 hight. Today after two years part time sailing my weight is gone down to 107kg.
I fell better too. I am not on a diet but I cut out a lot of bad stuff and on the boat you move more than you do on the couch at home.
Go sailing, good for the head and body.

Re: fat, out of shape sailors

Because of my usual, sedentary lifestyle, it has been my experience that I lose about 5 pounds on most week-long Caribbean Charters - despite the rum drinks. Now that the Admiral and I have finally purchased a boat, I can look forward to a lifetime of fitness (and rum drinks).

Re: fat, out of shape sailors

Don, if your photo is still accurate, you would definitely be in the "thin and trim" section of most anchorages I have been in from the Bahamas to Trinidad. I would guess that one of the considerations for buying a "Cat" or bigger monohull is the problem of listing at anchor with some of the folks I have seen out there cruising.

- - Also with the smaller boats there is the problem at anchor of the bow of the boat "hobby-horsing" when the "full-size" cruisers get amorous after some sundowners and particularly romantic sun-set.

Re: fat, out of shape sailors

On cruising powerboats, I have seen many more trim folks than on sailboats. Maybe it has something to do with these particular powerboats not having active stabilizers. They get some great weight reduction during passages between islands.
