Re: Experiences with Silicone 'antifouling' like Silic One from Hempel

Thanks for the feedback, and it bought back good memories of port chalmers from the days when I was on container ships. I'd often wander over to Careys Bay and look at the yachts whistfully, while our big rusty ship was being loaded for the trip round the horn to europe.

Sounds like the antifouling is working more or less as advertised. I've done a half resonable scrubbing job from a dinghy using a long soft broom and with ropes around the fore part of the hull with regular antifoul, but with this stuff it would be easier and more environmentally friendly.

Keen to hear the long term results in a few years, thanks for being a guinea pig!

Re: Experiences with Silicone 'antifouling' like Silic One from Hempel

I used to have those same wistful thoughts myself Ben, but I seldom got enough time out of the engine room when we were in port. Now I'm wondering how many of the exotic beasties and plants I found on the hull on Friday were brought in by those box boats.

If you have any more queries come to mind, just give me a shout. Meantime, Stewart Island beckons over the Easter Holidays........

Re: Experiences with Silicone 'antifouling' like Silic One from Hempel

Ah well, looks like we may have to head North instead of Stewart Island..... a wee SW blow coming in for the next couple of days, so it would just be plain uncomfortable getting there.

Was at sea from the mid 70's to mid 80's. Roro's to the Baltic and Med, tankers, bulkers and general cargo worldwide, drill ships. A few trips on the old Seatrain gas turbine box boats on the North Atlantic run. Was a Radio and Electronics Officer, but seemed to spend more of my time working on cargo and control gear on deck and in the engine room than I ever spent in the radio room. Served on Maersk boats for quite a few years, before they became the behemoth they are now. I used to work for a marine radio company, and came ashore when they made me an offer I wasn't able to refuse.

Never made it to the West coast of South America, which is probably one of the reasons I'm keen on taking some time out from work and heading to Chile.

Give me a shout if you're ever over in this neck of the woods again.

Looks like you were at sea before my time (90's). Radio officers were being retrained as electical officers, much to the annoyance of some. By then the writing was on the wall for 1st world crews and officers on cargo ships. I guess I saw the end of an era.

Hopefully I'll get back down to Stewart island sometime. Have a good cruise north.
