Dumping empty fuel barrels in the ocean

is this a common practice? Seen this video posted on /r/sailing/ it just Seems a tad irresponsible to me. Can someone justify this?

Most irresponsible. Lash the things on deck as extra flotation and dispose of them on land. Say, could we re-introduce the cat'o'nine tails as, ahem, motivation toward responsible nautical behaviour?

Yeah, and one would think a "Superyacht" would be able to sail across the pond without having to carry 55 gallon drums of diesel on deck, no?

At any rate, sometimes "Karma's a bitch..."

;-)

(Although, this occurred prior to the crossing in the vid)

Meanwhile last week a new 82 foot Swan, which left Finland at the same time as Andrew (Lytle) left there in a new 90 foot Swan, has been aground on one of the reefs here for 24 hours and has done itself a power of no good but could have been a lot worse...

Even the professionals can get it wrong. ONGHIARA has a mangled rudder, badly scratched hull and appears to have problems with her keel.

Assuming a US flagged vessel it's also illegal. tossing over a steel drum is fine, but the residual oil in the drum is subject to a pretty heavy fine.

Must have read "The Care and Feeding of the Offshore Crew" by Lin Pardey before the trip. She always advocated dumping your trash in the sea rather than disposing of it on land.

Pathetic

If you live or even travel the sea then you should respect the seas and that's certainly not respectful.

Had to be a while ago, as Texaco was bought a while ago, I think by Chevron! That looks to be a fairly new drum!

Re: Dumping empty fuel barrels in the ocean

It could be worse.

At least it wasn't heavy oil.

Diesel evaporates readily and I have been told US warplanes routinely dump JP5 (kerosene - it's in the purple colored pipes on carriers ). If this is untrue I stand ready to be corrected.

I, for one, consider dumping empty 55 gallon drums at sea in thousands of feet of water preferable to trying to dispose of them on land. They will disappear in short order. Better yet, preferable to turn them into a steel pan instrument. But steps should be taken to allow any residual diesel to evaporate and to make sure the drums sink, i.e., cut the drums in half with a grinder before disposing. They'll make a nice fish condo until they rust away.

That said, even carrying 55 gallon drums of diesel on board is bad form and if a mega sailing yacht cannot cross an ocean without that reserve it's contrary to all cruising customs and mores I respect. I think they need to do some sailing and turn off all their needless electrical goodies including AC, satellite TVs, etc., etc., and underwater lights.....

I would think of a steel drum as more as a multi-use item something you recycle not something that ends up in a landfill.

How can tossing over a drum of that size be considered fine in any since of the word.

Considering that no one gave a crap about the murder video of 4 fishermen, I'm pretty sure this would even be less on the radar.

This is sad, considering those barrels are worth money on shore. They could have kept them lashed on deck and sold them when they made landfall.
