Dumb Question maybe

Ok I keep seeing this "S/V" prefix before a lot of peoples boat names. What does this mean "S/V". I am kinda a noob to this cruising thing. So let the razzing begin!

sv

sailing vessel as in S/V Makai versus M/V for motor vessel.

I have also heard S/Y sailing yacht. I believe that SV and MV are the legally accepted terms.

And M/S for Motor Ship..
S/S = Steam Ship
M/T = Motor Tanker
T/T = Turbine Tanker......Etc.
