Isn't it obvious?
I'll go with the red wine theory.

Re: Dolphins smashing into rudder

The depth sounder I had on an a fishing dinghy years ago used to get lines of interference on it whenever Dolphins were around.

Dolphins would often show up at the bait ground off the town of 1770 in Queensland. Always knew when they were coming by the sounder getting funky. Happened too many times to just be coincidence and never saw the same interference when there were no Dolphins about.

Have never seen it on any other sounder or location but that one. Wondered if they were hearing the sounder transmissions and were trying to "talk" back to it. Anyone else seen similar?

Interesting hypothesis, especially if it was a multi-frequency CHIRP transducer. It may have been like "music" to their ears.

Might have been music to their ears, or they heard the lovely, tasty bait fish swimming and knew it was time for a feast!

If someone will send me a crate of Aussie red I'll test that theory on Kiwi Dolphins.

Re: Dolphins smashing into rudder

Here is a go-pro video I made while dive planing with dolphins behind my boat last June.

I posted a CF thread about it.
