Does anyone know about the yatch sunk at the leeds to Brisbane River

Hi my wife said they passed a mast and rigging sticking out of the water sunk to the sail bag. She said it looked like a
new arrival with a few boats around it.

Didn't know about that one but I do know of a few around the place. One near Macleay Island that sank last year after running into a sand bar, and another in Jacob's Well with half the mast protruding.

Silly people.

My wife is geographically challenged. I saw it yesterday at the mouth of Bulimba CK. It has sunk recently, looks like a 30-35' mono, still with the blue sail bag still on.

Wow, that will send MSQ into a tizzy. My yacht broke anchor at Colmslie last year and ended up stuck under Pinkenba Wharf #2 so they put an order on it to be hauled out as "unseaworthy."

Imagine what they'd do if it had sunk.

Yes, it's a pity VMRs are not allowed to assist unattended boats, the reason has to do with not having liability insurance, or so goes the rumour.

But then, would you want MSQ moving your boat without your permission?

Someone we know has written his mobile phone number large, and clear waterproof taped it along the stanchions by the gate, where you can easily read it from an approaching dinghy or runabout, which would allow someone, even a total stranger, to notify you if your boat were in trouble. That info is available to some, via the registration, but if your boat is registered elsewhere (like ours), I don't think the State of Illinois would be able to respond to Qld in a timely fashion! So that phone number idea could be useful for some people, anyway.

Of course, if the boat's sunk, maybe up the mast would be better!

A.

Re: Does anyone know about the yatch sunk at the leeds to Brisbane River

Water Police around the Brisbane River often shift yachts after they have dragged, due to the amount of cruise liners in the area. In my case MSQ put her on a temporary mooring before calling me. Mind you, she should never have drifted that far, a neighbouring yacht called it in at 9:30pm, but she wasn't "discovered" under the wharf until 8:00am the next day. The cause was an 18 month old Whitworths chain that simply stretched to breaking point. The replacement came from a place that had proper rated chain, and I had the shackle pins welded as well.

I used to have a sheet of paper taped to the window with my mobile number on it but someone tore it off. It's a good idea to do that, for sure.
