Documentation

our boat is currently documented with USCG and registered with the state of Oregon
some folks tell us that it is unnecessary to register with state if documented but others say different..
Thoughts?

Re: Documentation

States want their pound of flesh. If you have residence in OR and don't have the boat registered with some other state they will have a case that the boat should be registered there.

If you fly low and don't arouse interest you can get away with the issue not being brought up by them.

If they take an interest in you you may have grounds to argue otherwise and may even be correct. But the argument will cost you in time, aggravation, money and potentially sailing seasons if you are required to appear to argue at times that you would like to be moving the boat through or out of hurricane areas. If they prevail you will be on the hook for back registration and penalties.

My recollection of specifics is that documentation allows you to skip placing the required state registration number on the bow but does not get you off the hook for the money. Long ago recollection so don't take it for anything like gospel.

Re: Documentation

Florida wants registration even if your documented, but you dont need numbers on the bow just the stickers.

Re: Documentation

According to Oregon.gov

"Documented recreational vessels primarily used in Oregon waters must be registered."

State of Oregon: Titling & Registration

Yea that is vanity, get over it. Do you complain about your car license plates as well? What a ridiculous thing to say. Is that why you wanna document, because the looks? And some how your more posh and proper than a lowlife in a ski boat? aghhh

You do not need to put numbers on the boat, if it is documented. That's in the federal laws. They can make you register it, and display the little sticker (that's what Florida does), but they cannot make you put state numbers on it.

Beyond that, I don't know the law where you are. Some states require documented boats to be registered also. Some don't. You have to check specifically for the state you're concerned with. Every state these days has a website with the details you need.

Re: Documentation

Every state seem to be different. Some states want USCG registered boats registered in the state too. They also want just a sticker on the boat to show it's registered in the state. I live in TN but required state registration but I plan to use my boat in KY where I'm told no registration required for USCG documented boats.

Every state is different, it is all about getting money from you which they all do with different schemes. The states I have registered boats in ( IL, TX) only require display of stickers for documented vessels. If you don't like one states rules, go to another one, or keep moving every couple of months and skip the state taxes altogether. Being able to relocate at will if the local situation is not to your liking is one of the great benefits of living on a boat!
