docksiders vs Cruisers

An observation; in my time here in Annapolis I have noticed that a lot of the antipathy towards cruisers anchoring out is not just from waterfront home owners. A marina here is building a large extension that will, in effect remove an anchorage on back creek ( they have all the permits etc) A lot of the slip holders in the marina Where I keep my boat- a different marina- think this is a good thing and that cruisers should take a mooring. Is this attitude common- in the UK anchoring out is considered a sacred right, it seems not to be in the USA. I am not commenting on the extension per se, just the reaction by other sailors. Admittedly the anchorage tends to morph into the channel in high season and becomes interesting to traverse . thoughts?

Good ol USA...Land of the Free.

Unless you want to live on a boat and anchor out...then you have no rights!

What has happened to our country!

I'm not so sure what people who keep boats in a marina in Annapolis have to do with the USA or any place else but I suppose you can find what you are looking for any place you care to look.

Marinas I do not have a problem with per se. Anchorages are slowly becoming a thing of the past as each community takes away places to anchor and forces the boater to take a mooring or stay at a marina. Florida is a good example of what has happened to anchorages and that has been discussed quit a bit on this forum as well as others. Maybe its just me, but the rights of the individual have slowly been taken away in America and anchoring for free is just a small example of a much bigger problem.

I've been sailing out of Annapolis for 15 years, and have never heard comments of that nature. At the recent boat show we sailed in the harbor in light wind just to look at all the different boats at anchor and the flags they fly.... As sailing ports go it doesn't get much better than Annapolis. It's a Fun town. You can meet people from all over the world there. If I want a Quiet Anchorage, I go to St Michaels Is. et al.
