I lived in the Kootenay Mountains of BC once upon a time. Black bear capital of the known universe. I had a small orchard and the bears would climb the trees and eat apples like you've never seen, unless you've seen bears eat apples before. They slam them down so fast it is astounding and they don't seem to digest very much. Under the trees was a soupy apple pie like mixture. Armed bears? You're darn right. They've got arms perfectly suited for apple eating!

unfortunately, you are right on..

it is also typical to think the internet and this forum are American..

the generalization by Americans is that we are the center or forefront of things...

I think that is an attractive trait we need to overcome..

That's a fact, not a generalization.

No, the general consensus is that this is a controversial topic.

While there may be a majority opinion that this is a bad idea, there is a minority opinion that is large enough and LOUD enough to call into the question the assertion that there is a nearly universal opinion.

I don't think that's right on at all. There are loads of countries where guns are far more ubiquitous than in America, and much more in active use as well. Like most of the entire continent of Africa, large chunks of the middle east and central Asia, and even European countries like Finland where silencers and stuff like 20mm Lahti AT rifles are legal and fairly common. The US is really pretty tame compared to much of the world, its just that Hollywood skews the perception.

Sorry minaret, you're number one by a long shot.

Re: Do you pack ''HEAT'' while you sail?

Did you hear four armed men held up a sailboat? How they could lift the big cruiser is still being debated, but the fact they had four arms probably helped.

I think I need extra pockets not arms to hold mine up. Deep pockets.

I could see that there may be more guns in a huge country like the US, and I don't argue the statistics, but I'm guessing when a guy in afghanistan or somalia or the congo hears the word gun he doesn't immediately think of an american gun totin bible thumper. He thinks of his own problems with people with guns, because he has way more of them. I don't think that the numbers of owners mean as much as the numbers of incidents in which they are used and in what way they are used. Though given the number of school shootings and the like over here in recent years I can see where people from other countries might think we're gun nuts. And when I compare the average americans experience with guns with say the average israeli's, I can't help but note that while the american may own several small arms the israeli is probably much more experienced with military arms and prepared to use them, although he may actually own none. We could substitute the Swiss or several other nationalities. I guess what I'm trying to say is that in america guns are mostly expensive toys or basically for show, whereas in much of the rest of the world they are viewed and used as tools to acheive an end.
