DO YOU LIKE WATER?

The vast majority of sailors I know . . . never go into the water.

Not to swim
not to cool down
not to do anything

I find it odd that so many people who own sailboats, don't actually seem to want to get their feet wet.

It's sailing! The whole idea is not to get your feet wet! That's sinking.

These guys got their feet wet.

I'm a water person.....in it a lot. Know a very accomplished sailor/racer who can't swim. Just can't figure that out.

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

I realy don't see this way. I love water swim, dive, surf, fishing, drink, sking, if water is involved I do it. Most sailors I now do it as well . Maybe because I always lived and sailed on tropical waters.

Does this count?

Actually we do swim in the Bahamas but it's usually too cold up here in Toronto.

You are hanging around with the wrong group of sailors. Seriously. Almost every sailor I associate with is scuba certified.

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

Water is a main piece of the fun.

SCUBA, snorkeling, distance swimming, skiing (both liquid and sold water), wind surfing and any other thing I can think of that involves water. I even bathe in it and drink it occasionally.

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

Depends so much on where you are. Spent a few months in Canada, and don't think I got in water once. In Mexico, was in water usually a few times a day.

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

Swimming in clear warm water is very desirable. In Sea of Cortez,Mexico last few years water is so cold in winter you need a wetsuit if in more than 5 minutes. On the mainland you have to go south of Puerto Vallarta before water warms up,trouble is it is it's so cloudy you can't see anything. Then of course you want to rinse off the salt, using precious fresh water.

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

We cruise in the PNW and the water is cold. Despite this, we frequently see people swimming. Each year we end up in Desolation Sound and anchor for about a week (however long it takes to have a full holding tank) and swim daily off the swim grid. The water there is warm. Nothing better than a daily refreshing swim and sunning on the foredeck. Keeps the kids busy and out of trouble for a few hours too. Arghhhhh teenagers......
Cheers,
Bill

Re: DO YOU LIKE WATER?

thinwater . . . I'll bet that's about it. They just forget to be "young" and enjoy things as much.

The fact that I'm in western Lake Erie(kinda cold for a while, then warmer, then lots of algae), probably has something to do with it too. In fact, if the algae gets too thick this year I might look at marinas farther east(deeper water).
