1) Who wants the exaggerated motion even at the dock.
Modern wide beams carried to the stern dampen rolling. Did a Take The Wheel session last week in Annapolis where I was on a cat first and then immediately on a mono hull and have to say I did not like the jittery nervous motion of the cat. The mono slices through the water.

2) The cavelike feeling we got down inside.

4) The heeling.
Wide stern sections with chines create stability form factors that resist/limit heeling.

5) Spilling you drinks all the time
That's a bummer. Use cup holders.

6) Cooking on a tilting stove straped in
Get takeout. ; D

7) Passing food and drink up those step to the cockpit
Ok

It just sucks on so many levels. It's all good
Not so many levels as you may think with modern designed monohulls. The gaps are narrowing. I can definitely use the dollar savings to lift my quality of time on the water with the rest of the factors.

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

RKsailsolo,
Please do not listen to a word I said about catamarans. If I were you I would get a mono and go sailing. No worries mate.

Also, I like having all the woman on my boat and not yours.
You will learn the lesson I learned the hard way

Yes Cotemar, I do covet thy boat and other things. Just can't afford it plus the rest of the costs for the time period I have in mind.

Ok, between us, which one of the 'things' do you covet?

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

There are some multihulls on the west coast but the problem in San Diego, and Southern California in general, is that its very difficult to find an end tie to put a multihull.

I presume most West Coast sailors have never tried catamarans (but know the usefulness of jibs) or they would never have "gone back."

I have always steered away from the Wharrams because I assumed their lack of boards would mean they wouldn't go to windward very well. What is it about the Tiki's that you like so much?

Luckily I'm content with small and basic.. if you gave me a Lagoon 440 I'd sell it and commission a Tiki 38..

Catamarans and trimarans: sailing with training wheels.

Kind of missing the point of the thread. It's not about whether you can afford a cat or not. It's about whether people who own a cat would go back to a mono.

And it's been answered many times already. In all but a small minority of cases the answer is no.

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

We might be going back. If we keep our current boat we need to work about 3 more years. If we sell and get a less expensive boat, we can leave now. Our options are a 41+ mono preferably center cockpit, vagabond, gulfstar etc,,, or a smaller cat back down in the 32 to 36 range. Maybe a gem or solaris or endeavor, our plans are really only Bahamas and Caribbean , we really don't like the how rolley monos are but a larger one may be less rolley. The plus side is larger mono can carry a lot more weight. Trade offs on each, really tough decision, we've owned both

Once you accept an ugly woman is easier you never go back. Most comments about the advantages of a catamaran also apply to a condominium

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

Unlike the old days, there are lots of beautiful and fast high performance cruising cats available now, like this 60' Schionning as just one example of many...
