What if I only want a couple of folks on my boat at one time. I would have to deal with more guests if I followed your advice.

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

Rohan, you ask the question: "Does it count if you were only a multihuller in your own mind?" No. It means you haven't really experienced a multihull, let alone having cruised and lived on one over a wide range of conditions.

But no worries. I gather you are a life-long monohuller who, after comtemplating the issue, has decided to remain one. Good for you. I certainly won't suggest that you are wrong, or that a multihull would be better suited for your budget, taste and intended use.

But to answer the OP's question - no, you are not a multihuller who has decided to go back.

Who gives a SH** about a main anyway when you have a big ass Genoa and code 0. We're going down wind where the drinkies are. Lagoon 39 has a reduced main with this intention.

Ahem I do. As does any multi hull sailer with any sort of thought of sailing to windward. And yes I note that the 39 has gone for a 1970s Prout style rig. And even it has a fully battened main. And I have a big assy and a biggish screecher, genoas are crap for DDW sailing.

I think that there are therapists who can steer you to programs that will help you with that.

Wondering about this. How well does it work and how easy/hard is it to fly and douse?

I saw one of these in a vid somewhere and there was some type of discussion about having to drop it in the water to get it down.

A real multi-hull sailor would never sail to windward, as the next drinkie is ALWAYS downwind.

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

Actually Factor, apart from the location of the mast (stepped at the companionway bulkhead), the Lagoon 39 has not reverted to a 1970's Prout rig at all: it is not a cutter, but rather has a fractional rig with a relatively large, self-tacking roller-reefing genoa. Also unlike the Prout, it does not have backstays and a main with minimal roach, but rather no backstays and a flat-top main. It can also be ordered with a Code zero.

I suspect that the rig will provide good performance close reaching and it will certainly be easy to handle upwind, where the combination of a flat top main and large headsail on relatively wide travellers should keep good sail shape (and hopefully decent performance) to windward.

Not if it has an in-mast furling main.

BTW guys, the monkey is just winding you up.

Whew. Our main is on a roller furler, but it's OUTSIDE the mast. You had me worried for a moment there. I thought I could never go home again.

Re: Do Multihullers Ever go Back?

How well do you go to windward with that setup?
