Do I need to check out???

We are in the Canaries waiting to leave for the Caribbean. We are well over our allowance of time in Europe ie: 90 days but no one here really cares so far. I'm wondering if we need to check out of Spain. In my past cruising life there would be real issues if you were not carrying a Zarpe from the last place you were when you tried to check into a new port. If we will need one to check into St. Maarten they we will do it but if not I don't want to go through officialdom here and make them aware we are way way over our time limit.

The Dutch side will ask. The French side is just a fill in form at a computer and a few euros.

Re: Do I need to check out???

I got in a heap of trouble by not having outbound clearance from Antigua/Barbuda when I attempted to clear in to St Maarten at Phillipsburg a few years ago. Northerly swells prevented me from getting ashore to clear out in Coddrington, Barbuda, so we just left. We needed to be in BVI a few days later to meet our son.

The immigration lady at the Phillipsburg office gave me quite a reaming out, and even threatened me with confiscating my boat. My excuse for not clearing out didn't cut it, apparently. She ranted at me for at least five minutes. I finally said that I didn't want to clear in and would go to the French side. She refused to allow me to do that, so I asked that she clear me in and out. I paid the fees and left for the French side.

It was not a pleasant experience. My fault, really, but I had hoped I would be cut a little slack because I couldn't safely get ashore to obtain an outbound clearance in Barbuda.

Re: Do I need to check out???

We had a similar situation as Hud - left St John without checking out (ever try to get a zarpe from the US?) and must have got the same lady in Phillipsburg. Go to the French side and you will be OK.

Interesting.

French officials elsewhere (e.g. Martinique, Guadeloupe) did check for zarpes on all non-EU boats winter season 2013.

I would be very careful, even at st Martin/-een as customs' habits tend to be copied from one place to another, especially the nasty ones.

PS @OP Do NOT try the trick at Antigua!!!!!!

All the French islands we checked in/out of St Marteen, St Barts, Martinique, Guadeloupe were completely lightweight and could not care less what prior docs we had. 2014. Of course YMMV.

Re: Do I need to check out???

I would agree that the French islands are quite a bit more lenient. Anywhere else in the Caribbean it will be mandatory to have a clearance from your last port.

If you do not clear out you may get into trouble when you will arrive next time in a country that belongs to the Shengen agreement as you have never left the area.

Re: Do I need to check out???

Thanks for the feedback fellows, we will attend customs tomorrow and check out. The fact that we are 90 days over our 90 days might be interesting.

BTW: In the US, a Zarpe is referred to as a “VESSEL ENTRANCE OR CLEARANCE STATEMENT”

Re: Do I need to check out???

Well the good news is that we have checked out and the officer only looked at our passports to confirm the number on the Zarpe, never looked when we were checked in. I suppose he should have stamped the passports, which he did not do but who am I to tell him how to do his job. Thanks for all the feedback.

Re: Do I need to check out???

robertsailor,

Out here, in the So Pac, they do look for the entry and exit stamps. I don't know if one missing from that far away would bother them, but it is common to have Immigration look at the whole passport.

Re: Do I need to check out???

I traveled all over Western Europe and never once had my passport stamped. I asked about it and was told it was no longer done. If I wanted stamps I would have to pay for them.
This depends entirely on the country. Asia and S America often stamp the heck out of it.

Re: Do I need to check out???

Well we will keep a copy of the Zarpe but it seems that once I get cleared into a new country that should start to form a new trail....I hope
