I have a fused ankle( so it doesn't bend or flex) and can really only use one fin effectively when diving. Something like this would be fantastic! A scaled down version to match speed of normal fins would be considerably smaller too. Hopefully it will become commercially available.

Very cool! Way, way back, I was a "combat swimmer" (UDT/SEAL). Interesting idea, I think it would tend to get fouled on gear, buddy lines etc in typical near-zero visibility conditions. For long u/w transits, combat swimmers use electrical assist devices, and then switch to fin power. I can't see how the new device would work for planting explosives on ship's prop shafts, or getting through anti-swimmer nets, etc. Great concept and surely there is an application, but I don't see it for combat swimmers.

I agree, the concept has great merit and I hope it becomes available widely as lots of swimmers and divers begin to experiment with their own garage-built versions. For clear-water recreational diving, I think it will be fantastic idea.

For combat swimmers in typical murky/black water, with buddy lines and gear all over the place, maybe not, especially when in the target area around piers, prop shafts, anti-swimmer nets etc.

But a lot of concepts that are developed for military applications find a better use in the world of sports.

Re: Dive-planing with dolphins youtube video

Just wanted to update this thread to say I finally got to use the SEALplane I built last fall. My family and a couple of buddies towed each other around in the waters of Provincetown harbor on Cape Cod. IT WAS AWESOME! You feel like you're flying. The water isn't as clear as it is in the Bahamas, but with viz of 10-15 feet, it was plenty interesting (eelgrass, clamshells, crabs, etc); and the experience even without sights to see is exhilarating. Best part for me was being towed through a big school of shiners, and they all parted in alarm at my approach. . . . Can't wait to use it again.

Thanks, Matt!

Cape Cod....I heard some beaches were closed because of white shark activity. Any truth to that news?

A few days ago on the National News. I am sure I heard they were great whites off Cape Cod.

I don't know about recent beach closures, but there are lots of great whites feeding on the grey seal population off Chatham at the southeast end of Cape Cod. It wouldn't put me off swimming or dive planing in P'town harbor. Surfing off the Chatham and Orleans beaches has become a tad more stressful though.

I read that 1st, 3 Cape Cod beaches were closed due to 6 great white sharks were feeding on a whale carcus.

Then a few days later other Cape Cod beaches were closed due to great whites feeding on seals.

Re: Dive-planing with dolphins youtube video

Yes, there are sharks on the outside of the Cape, feeding on the several thousand seals near Chatham and Monomoy, and the whale carcass shown on the news. Some sharks have even been seen off the outside of Provincetown, near Race Point and Herring Cove Beach. There's a small population of seals (maybe 100) inside the Ptown harbor, but we've never heard reports of sharks coming into the harbor to feed on them. I think if that started happening, there would be plenty of people to see it and report it. So we took a calculated risk. I also snorkeled and spearfished all week long. And swam off the boat every morning. And drove home on the Mass Pike in awful traffic, where we saw at least two nasty accidents. You play the odds every time you wake up and step outside. . . .

Re: Dive-planing with dolphins youtube video

Agree that swimming or dive-planning in the ocean is much safer than driving a car.

And that dive-planning looks really like a fun activity.

There is a large female tagged great white that is monitored and swims between Florida and Maine along the coast. I do not log on and check before I get in the ocean. Lol...but maybe I should.

I'm not sure why the original videos disappeared from YouTube, but this one seems to work:
