I read in the latitudes and attitudes magazine before it met it's demise that once a year a bunch of sailboats leave San Diego CA. together and head as a group to a place in Mexico for a party/charity event. I think people help the kids somehow in this small town? Does anyone know how I can find out more about it?

You're probably talking about Santa Maria or Turtle Bay; those are their two stops. Turtle Bay has plenty of narco cartel guys with Humvees so maybe save your efforts for Santa Maria.
