I love the multi change.
Comparing the stuffy old races to these high performance cats is like watching paint dry.

Sorry for the confusion. Was meant to represent a poll question, and a discussion question as separate entities.

Re: Did The America's Cup Make a Mistake Shifting to Multi-Hulls?

Have to say I loved the Plymouth series, but they had bad luck wind-wise in SD. I think some of the innovations are great -- the defined racecourse prime among them. Looking forward to the remaining AC series and then the move to the big boats. SF harbour should make for great racing.

Hey, it's fast, tactical, hard to do (those guys are working), and exciting. What's not to like?

Re: Did The America's Cup Make a Mistake Shifting to Multi-Hulls?

I don't really see that it matters - and 99.99% of people don't care. A combination of watching paint dry. and golf .

Hell, I bet that same percentage for the people who actually take part wouldn't even attend if they weren't paid to / weren't making money from it.

Lots of rich people have always had to waive their cheque books around to buy some freinds / to have their ego massaged.

But I am sure makes a nice day out , I might even attend - if it was happening nearby.

I buy the argument that the multis are good for the sport. The Cup certainly pushes its evolution. Wing mainsails and wave piercing bows are the new big thing but a few years ago carbon sails, kevlar/carbon hulls, wing keels were just for the AC boats. Now many of us have them on our cruisers.

Yep. Even worse than the old IOR rules. End up with a bunch of weird hulls designed to beat the rule, not necessarily fast, safe or seaworthy.

Another problem. Basically if it isn't NFL or NBA or something of that ilk it is stuck away on some obscure channel at some obscure time and certainly not advertised.

Some will like it, some won't. The old formula was past it's use by date, so some kind of change was needed. At least the boats are fast now.

Re: Did The America's Cup Make a Mistake Shifting to Multi-Hulls?

I find a ton on the AC website and the Sailing Channel. They have it all podcast. And I don't really care how many hulls they have.

What ever gets over the course fastest...

Don't like the hull design design a new course?

Bunch of wealthy white wankers. Seriously, there isn't a person alive that doesn't think Larry Ellis is a complete a%*hole.

Re: Did The America's Cup Make a Mistake Shifting to Multi-Hulls?

The America's Cup was a long held Trophy run under the rules of a typical "American World Championship" if you like.

Never did the committee think for a nano-second that anyone would ever take it from them because they owned the rule book.

Now it has died it's natural death, the Aussies showed that ALL things are possible and now quite honestly it has died the same death as walking on the moon.

There's much more technical advances coming from other forms of boating than A/C will ever give, it's dead, it's not interesting and it's so very expensive.

True, but I like watching for the same reason I like NASCAR, the wrecks.
Is what it is.
AC has always had that snooty Biff and Buffy feel to it and I really never watched until I saw some of the Oracle trial stuff. Still thought the people were snooty but it was fun watching the carnage.
