Dempster Highway drivers flock to new destination — the Arctic coast

I've always said that the best boat you can own is the biggest one you can trailer.

Now the all-season highway from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk in the Yukon Territory in Canada's northwest is a reality. You can drive up the spectacular Dempster Highway and launch in the Arctic Ocean.....

I tried to find a map of this highway to post here and couldn't. If someone (Gord May?) can search and find a map of this highway, could he please post it, for the folks who almost know where it is?

I suggest that anyone considering pulling a trailer up the Dempster go to Youtube and search on "Dempster Highway".

You must be well prepared and self sufficient to travel this highway as there are many miles between services and the services are more rudimentary than in the more southern areas of the continent. Don't even think about this trip in a vehicle that isn't equipped with all terrain tires, IMHO.

The road can be dry and dusty or wet and slippery and the mud will stick to you like glue. Most likely you will encounter many different road and climactic conditions.

Driven it many many times. I would never consider dragging anything but an aluminium hunting boat up there. If you go past eagle plains you can almost gurentee you’ll replace at least one tire. After you cross the Olgilvie they start using local crushed shale for the road, just like a million pointy razor blades that can literally eat tires. Cross winds that blow tractor trailers and RVs over quite regularly. Beautiful drive but unless the boat was free or you don’t mind leaving it on the side of the road when the axel breaks or pay out the nose for a tow.

Why not just launch into the Mackenzie or Peel and sail there? Based on rbk's post, take a storm trysail. Should be a quick trip!

Lol the Mac delta is a maze of shoals that most would have a hard time canoeing down without grounding. Peels a bit better
