Delivery -> sleigh ride

Tomorrow around 6 or 7 pm we are taking this over the Columbia River Bar and scooting up the coast in a big southerly. 2009 Beneteau 46 that is in excellent shape, sails are hardly used. 23,000 lb French design built to loyd standards.

Forcast is for 10-20 with puffs to 30 ...... I am betting we average 10-12 knots and get around flaterly.

We have immersion suits, EPIRB, and I have done 24 offshores with a couple of them with same type of conditions. Ever seen a Beneteau 46 surf

Ha, you have a very different philosophy to me when I do deliveries, I really baby the boat, no surfing, no pushing the boat, reef early.

Then again most of the boats I deliver are old and have potentially unknown problems. I take my time, pick my weather and do my best to get the boat where it's going with a minimum of wear and tear.

This time of year, up there, he is picking his weather & babying the boat! Assuming that 30kts is all they see that is, for Southerlys up there can be what bring on the bad stuff. As in double or triple those numbers.

That same southerly can have you pinned down in Neah Bay for days or set the table for a very uncomfortable slog down the Straits of Juan De Fuca.

I love a good sleigh ride...in a Laser or DN. Thank God for immersion suits-presumably with AIS! My thoughts: lose the dodger and bimini or risk having them forcibly removed...

Yes looking at all that SUPERSTRUCTURE I must agree it could be a very big hazard in big wind !!!

That's not babying a boat. 10-12 knot average is a 240-288 mile day. The only days I have ever got near those sorts of numbers (233 from memory) we were racing a very light 45 footer (Geoff Stags old whispers) across the tasman, with top speeds around 23 knots. In a pretty steady 35 knots with a kite up.

Broke a lot of gear, put her on her side regularly, and generally had a blast, (until we hit a whale at about 15 knots, that was scary) but we sure weren't babying her!

Done 220 a few times on a 64 footer, just cruising, but still not babying her and not in 10-20 knots with gusts to 30.

Could be a puker with a boat that light. The big canvas top shouldn't be trouble with the winds aft.

We are 36 tons; 58 feet. Our sleigh ride was a close reach to Milwaukee from Muskegon. Easy-rider to start but building. We did around 10 most of the way and saw 11.4 on the GPS for about the last hour. 70 miles in 9 hours. The wind politely turned around two days later for the return trip.

Ha, my brother races some very fast boats. He said once the average speed is the lowest number that you see, interesting that you say you did 10 knots most of the way, but your average speed for the trip was around 7.8 knots.

Yep, It sounds strange in theory, but it's very true in practice!

Yeah, It's weird, you watch the GPS or log sitting on all these crazy numbers, then you calculate the average it's always way low. I wonder what if it's due to the boat snaking around on course, but Its always disappointing.

So damn hard to beat that hull speed hump on a long average, on most cruising boats. And when you do it's mostly due to current or surface drift helping.

I haven't sailed these new wider breed of cruiser, so I can't comment on them. Maybe they get up and boogie much better than older designs?
