Yep they suggested that on TV.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

I don't know that the taller poles help in a direct hit. The boat has a lot of leverage on the pole and the boat has a lot of wind force on it that the poles must take. There also has to be someone there to adjust lines. Now in a marina that is not in the direct wind field but in the storm surge area, tall poles would be good. Of course the boat tied down on high ground is best with anchoring by the stern in a sheltered harbor being second best if you cant avoid it altogether.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Why anchor to the stern ?

I've heard this a few times.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Almost all sailboats anchored from the bow wander or yawl back and forth. That does two things. First it chafes the anchor line and second it exposes the beam to the violent wind. Anchored from the stern the sailboat will not yawl back and forth and will created a more steady state load on the anchoring system. Power boats will have to experiment to see what is better for them.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Not looking very pretty at Abel Point Marina they pan across it on TV for about 2 seconds, managed to grab this shot.

One of the bridges from the shore down onto the pontoon has suffered damage. Other social media reports that P arm has had some finger damage. Keeping my fingers crossed, my charter boat is tied up in there somewhere, safely I hope.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Another thing, if anchoring with nylon rode instead of chain, a chain "leader" should be used so that the nylon is always under water. That will keep the nylon from melting due to internal friction----if you're lucky.

Dead and buried. I went to school with his son. A harmless fella who loved his Dad and didn't deserve to be left the mess his Dad left behind.

Story was Keith Williams also liked to take a bulldozer to the reef at low tide at Hamilton Island.

Hitchinbrook was wiped out by the last big cyclone (Yasi). Now Debbie is taking aim at Hamilton Island, his other big "accomplishment". Is this karma?

I think we ketch your drift but the same result would be obtained by getting the jib off the furler and setting a pocket handkerchief riding sail aft.

Back on track... thus far only property damage reported. ... which is good.

We had a mini storm cell go through here last night.... 5 minutes from start to finish.... what the road to town normally looks like.... and what it looked like after it was cleared and re-opened this morning. Affected maybe a kilometre wide swathe and ran for about 30km. Didn't feel a thing here at mi casa, gave the neighbours a bit of a start.
