Custom Mattress

I have a friend with a bad back. He needs a spring mattress.

Has anyone tried taking a nice spring mattress and try customizing it to a boat? Specifically, I am thinking of a catamaran. They seem to pinch in at the end. This is easy to cut with polyurethane foam, but what about a more complex spring matress.

Re: Custom Mattress

What about natural latex? A bit expensive, but easy to cut and extremely nice on bad backs.

Re: Custom Mattress

Most spring mattresses need a good box frame to ventilate and distribute the load properly don't think it'll be suitable and cutting won't be easy.

Agree with recommended latex mattress. Better for back and easier to cut. Easy to support with slats to ventilate.

Re: Custom Mattress

There are companies that make custom spring mattresses for boats. If you truly need one I don't feel there is better investment to make for boat life

Re: Custom Mattress

THe Froli system works well for ventilation. Also does some of the work a box spring does. Expensive but good for mildew prevention. I have no relation to the company, just a customer

Spring and foam. I agree that a good mattress is critical on a boat that you will be sleeping on. I spent good money to have one made by a semi local mattress company and I've never regretted it.

Re: Custom Mattress

Regarding ventilation, I have had good luck with Drydeck, the interlocking plastic tiles. Much cheaper than something made for boats. Also, there was a good tutorial somewhere on how to make a normal spring mattress into a custom vee-berth mattress. I'll see if I can find the link.

Cheers, Bill

Local to me Houston mattress makers does custom work to include boats. Surely there is a mattress maker close to you that does as well. If not a google of boat mattress brings up several companies that even have patterns for lots of boats.

Re: Custom Mattress

I tried a local guy, paid them and everything, took the Mattress to him to trace, the whole nine yards. I don't think he ever sent it in as it never came in, but at least he did refund my money.
My bunk is a Pullman berth and it has a few angles in it and isn't an easy cut unfortunately.
The ideal would be to find a place that has patterns for Island Packet so I could just order, but I haven't found one yet

Re: Custom Mattress

There's two companies in Portland Maine. One does foam/gel type work and one does traditional type mattress. I bet Goggle knows who they are.

Re: Custom Mattress

We had a mattress made by Boat Beds By HandCraft Mattress Company | for our master stateroom and liked it so much, we had them come back and make mattresses for the other four bunks. If we weren't so poor, we'd have them make a mattress for our bed at our land home as well. Very, very comfortable and I'm extremely critical when it comes to sleeping comfort. Actually, I'm pretty critical when it comes to most anything.

Fair winds and calm seas.

I called them, price ranged form $1,700 for the cheapest, to $3060 for the best.
For $3,000 I think it best that I load my Mattress up and drive there and actually look at the options, as once you order it and it arrives, its yours.
