Current Anchorages in Miami

Do any of you know what the current status is of the Anchorage in and around the Venetian Islands. We are looking to sit out their to make passage to Bimini. I know there has been lots of stuff going on and wondered if anyone had an update. The alternative would be No Name but we would like to provision up in Miami.

Re: Current Anchorages in Miami

The status is the same as it's always been. Everything is open except the area of Sunset Lake with all the dinghys anchored there. Once you get past all the tow away signs on Collins Canal it's ok to tie up, but there's really no place to tie up too. The dock at Publix is overcrowded now and someone has removed the wooden steps to make it easier to climb up at low tide. Definitely lock the dinghy there or even leave someone there to watch it while the other shops.

Re: Current Anchorages in Miami

We have been anchored in Sunset Lake for about a week waiting on weather to go to Bimini. We will leave here tomorrow. Right now there are six cruising sailboats, a motorcat, one little blue boat that is always here, and 20 or so Pico Laser hulls. The Florida legislature is still grinding away, but for the time being we are legal as are all the usual spots.

The Police Dock has a 20 min limit, and we met a couple who paid $300 and had to retrieve their towed dinghy from Seatow for staying there all day to go to the boat show">Miami Boat Show.

The old Publix dock is legal and crowded. There are lots of overly short painters making it difficult to tie to the dock. There is a short wooden ladder attached to that dock. Many dinghies are tied to the wall just above and below the dock. About 2/3 of the dinghies are locked, often on very short chains or cables.

There are signs, both Seatow and Miami Beach, along the Collins Canal wall in different spots. In other spots there are no signs and the occasional boat tied to the side.

Waterway Guide has a copy of the docking/mooring/launching ordinance if you would like to become an amateur attorney.

Re: Current Anchorages in Miami

As for the new legislation, unfortunately it looks like it’s going to pass. If it does, it would take effect July 1, 2016. If the law sunsets with new legislation after the FWC Pilot Program ends, the earliest new laws would take effect is July 2018.

We’re still trying to stop this. Please contact the Senators and Representatives in Florida, especially if you’re a Florida resident. Here’s info to help: http://www.waterwayguide.com/latest-...for-final-vote

Re: Current Anchorages in Miami

Cruisers Net has a "Call to Action" requesting that boaters everywhere petition Florida Governor Scott to veto the anchoring legislation that has now passed both houses of the Florida legislature.
