That's a lot of difference for one year.

I'm in the same situation except that I stand to make quite a bit more money if I wait another year. For me it's a no-brainer, I'm leaving now.

Re: Cruising start at 55 or 56

Happy New Year ! I'm 68 & I've just sailed alone from North Carolina (Beaufort) to Sint Martin, Dutch West Indies in 11 days... In 2006, I resumed skiing with my son, after a 30 year gap... If you're in good shape, you can easily sail 'till you're 80 years old, so what's one year really ? I would wait one more year & use that year to prepare my life afloat Read again Adlard Coles' Heavy Weather Sailing, read, read, read... all the classic from Joshua Slocum to "Taking on the World: A Sailor's Extraordinary Solo Race Around the Globe" by Elen Mac Arthur

This seems to figure in an uncanny foresight into future events and expenses. I will propose that reality will result in one of the following:

1) Cash kitty is much less money at the "low point".
or
2) "Low point" comes much sooner than you expect.

If you have a separate kitty set aside for post cruise, and you have budgeted for insurance I would say go for it. If the cash kitty needs to hold you over after cruise till making money again, and cash kitty needs to cover emergencies (while having minimal or no insurance) I would say need to plan on the 56 year old option.

So why not wait two years? Four years? How about 10 years?

Seems to me your questions keep orbiting around the quest for something impossible to find here; security, or perhaps certainty. From my perspective, what I would be questioning is whether I have enough -- enough money, boat, skills, experience, desire, adventure, longing ...

The question of enough is not something you're going to find answers to ... at least, not here. If you don't have enough, then wait. If you do have enough, then go now.

Yeah, read, read, read. Read Outerbridge Reach and you may not want to leave the dock.

One year for triple the money? Geez unless it's doing something illegal where you may get caught and turn 1 into 10 to 20 or something, that is a no-brainier to me.
I mean 1 yr, and Champagne for life as opposed to beer? Or having a plan for God forbid a dis-masting or anything else that would ruing your dream but be survivable if you stay one more year? Is this really a question

On edit, I'm a Beer man, but you get the point

Re: Cruising start at 55 or 56

I wonder how many of the "go now" people have 90+ year expectancies in mind?

I fully believe that you must reach for your dreams, and reach for them NOW, but decades of poverty, when you are not so able, suck.

My choice has been to sprinkle adventures all along the way. Some in my 20s, 30s, 40, 50s... Never stop, never wait, but ever mortgage beyond what you can pay.
