Re: Cruising/sailing and working out??

Well, well.

So much depends on where one was (fitness wise) before taking up cruising.

For us here it was all huge let down but then again we were probably combat fit 10 years ago when we started living in the boat. We used to bike, run and ski big way and then we trekked whenever wx and jobs permitted. That was our shore life. Too good to be true. And so what.

It took some time to stop crying over the condition we once were and finding new ways of staying fit. I bet our shift from unhealthy to healthy stress was a way bigger benefit to us than the apparent loss of muscle and agility. One has to look at the whole picture to see what is good for one and what is not.

How true!

Is the additional activity of full-time cruising enough to keep you fit? Perhaps if you were used to working in a cubicle and watching 5 hours of TV every night. If however, as the original poster described, you are accustomed to several hours of focused exercise every day, that activity isn't going to equal a workout.

This is a challenge that my wife and I (especially her) have put a lot of time and thought into. The links shared above go to our cruising blog but my wife Rebecca has a separate blog dedicated to this subject. You may find an idea or two there.

Re: Cruising/sailing and working out??

Yep. A cat is such a nice platform for staying fit. And especially so while anchored.

Meanwhile, a monohull sailor will get an extra exercise from simply trying to stay within the lifelines ;-). And especially so when anchored ;-) ;-) ;-).

Cheers,

Re: Cruising/sailing and working out??

there was a couple next to me on a cat who had a stationary bike, tread mill and some other bs on board--they dont go far, and they do use em--but their cockpit is a lot larger and flatter than is mine. mebbe cat sailors need extra stuff to do to keep fit--their boats do not help them get a workout.
