Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

I visited a neighbors boat last night at the marina I have rented a slip at for now. He has lots of great little time and money saving ideas.
One way to save money is to keep an open mind and a look out for good tips and ideas from others. The way someone else does something might be a lot better and economical then the usual way of doing it.

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

Hi Every one,

I have read many pages of this thread. I could not read them all. I was amazed that it took so long for a disagreement to occur. Congrats!!

I sail a Tartan 34. It is a good boat. Like many people here, I dream of sailing away. The discussions here are great. I can see that many sailors here are just dreaming. That is ok, i am one of them too. i used to have all these questions too. what boat, how much does it cost, built or buy, and hundreds of others.

I lived in Annapolis for several years. I got to see many cruisers come and go. I have talked to many of the sailors that we all know here. I wont drop names.

I believe that there is no one answer to theses questions. i have gathered other people's opinions. the wisdom seems to be pretty simple. the best boat to get is the one you have. Go now, as soon as you can. Dont set a date. Just go when you are ready, then tell your friends that you left. Everyone wants to know what it costs. There is no answer. it costs what you have!!

I had planned to sail away. I got as far as Florida. LOL

You guys are silly arguing about mono vs multi hull. we makes our choices and we takes our chances. We pays our money too.

Good luck to all you sailors out there, and to all you wanna be one too!!

not....but is a well known factoid that zee is female.

going when ready--lol...many folks build a boat for cruising and continue to find excuses to remain on the dock or mooring. i left without being "ready"knowing i can find workers and parts in the places i was immediately sailing towards.

i was correct. and the used parts here are less pricey than in usa.... go figger.....

It might have to do with how the used parts were acquired before being sold to you . . .

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

from abandoned boats left for years without anyone paying docking fees....the boats were acquired by the marina and sold for parts. you would be surprised how many fools leave boats abandoned and rent goes unpaid.

The most important thing to remember...I have seen alot of people that wanted to get everything ready/done before they left, so never got around to leaving. What you really NEED and what you want to get done before you go are two different things. A freind of mine cruises the Pacific with a campstove, water in jugs, basically over glorified camping. You can always add more stuff to your baot, but time cannot be replaced.

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

wolfenzee, you are soo correct..is one reason why i chose to leave un-repaired and find stuff as i go...so many leave their dream unfinished and then become unable to return, losing the ability or desire to continue to pay the docking fees for this dream, thus terminally done with the project, leaving it to those who rescue and salvage the bits to others in midst of their dreams. there is always a source--LEGAL source--for spares, as these dead dreams are picked apart by others.....dont be the source of the bits and pieces-- be one who lives your dream.
i know some who couldnt stand to leave because some little thing wasnt done-- then had serious medical issues causing them to never leave to fulfill their lifelong dream--how frustrating and hopeless can one get.....

I have been able to get a tremendous amount of "used" stuff for my boat (including my boat) that I would not have been able to afford otherwise...most of it was actually higher quality anyway.
