Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

When I sailed my father's boat from Bermuda to Norfolk, the alternator had gone bad so we had no power...everyone else was old school retired USN so we used sextant and dead reckoning the whole way ( a few position checks with freighters proved us to be spot on). I have no problem with techie things, I have lots....I just don't want to put myself in a position where my life depends on their working. If the failure of any component or system puts you or your boat at risk it needs to be reviewed. That is my own personal philosophy and I plan to stick by it...all I ask is that you at least give it enough thought so when your techie stuff fails, you will at least remember you had been warned.

Maybe its tme to start the "survivalist sailing on less than $500 a month" thread...

OTOH - if we all simply continue cruising our computers none of the bad stuff like your watch stopping will harm us...
