Cruising Can Be Boring

There. I said it. I'll say it again.

Cruising can be boring.

Really boring.

Stuck in an anchorage waiting for the weather to change. Motoring when there is no wind so you can get somewhere else you'd rather be. Getting there and finding yet ANOTHER jaw dropingly beautiful beach. Having yet another rum drink when you get there.....

Just saying.

Cruising Can Be Boring

I was never able to be stationed in Hawaii when I was in the Army, however talking to those that were, most ended up hating it.
Joke was just another day in (expletive deleted) paradise.

Hmmm.... let's see, would I rather be stuck in traffic on I-80 or stuck in a nice anchorage in bad weather.... hmmmm?

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

You may have said that in jest but I may give up cruising because of it. I'm not up for racing around the world and the rest is starting to get a little boring between the fuel pump failures and running aground.

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

I didn't cruise when I lived on the Gulf Coast but sailed a lot. After a few years, it does get old even though when I first arrived I thought it was so nice to be living near the water again as I did in youth.

I was 39 then and could enjoy the beach bars, ladies etc...............it was totally awesome for a while. Racing beach cats was what I did 110% of the time or sailed those boats on none race weekends 9-10 months out of the year. That and run a simulator contract and be a single parent.

After 10 years of that I switched to cycling. Up here i'm back to sailing but just now cleaned up my old bike today after a ride this past week.

It's all about variety

Cruising is actually set up the wrong way. You should do it in your 30's and 40's or sooner to get the total experience

Being anchored out can be terribly boring.

The one good thing about where I anchor out is that there are trails nearby and decent fishing...................and a beautiful view.

I can deal with that for maybe 2 days! As long as I have several good books and the internet.

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

I've really never been bored, some days can be a bit slow but not boring. We like to see new places so we tend to move around a lot. If we hung out in one area too long it might happen but I think it's up to the individual if they live a boring life or not. It might also be about expectations and we are all different in that area. Some days are quite exciting and it's nice to have days when you can sit back with a good book and enjoy it or invite some new friends over and share experiences. You can be bored in work or play anywhere in the world, it's a decision we all make.

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

Lots of folks find cruising boring...the personality/skills that earned them the money/freedom to cast off cruising also makes them not able to unplug and relax. They drive themselves or their crew crazy not knowing quite how to deal with the down time. Heck some cruisers I know have even start a business from an anchorage in Mexico just to feel busy again. They failed at "retirement" and enjoy working....or so my wife tells me....

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

Yes, we've had boring days. Like steaming all day in a straight line. Even with breathtaking scenery. Like waiting out a blow at anchor, after you've finished all the boat chores you can think of.

Still, beats the heck out of sitting at a desk all day!

Plus, on a boat, boring is a whole lot better than "exciting." Don't need any more of THOSE days.

I'll never understand that perspective, other than intellectually, no matter how old I get. True love never grows tiresome. I am, and always will be, an islander with saltwater in my veins...

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

On Saturday I sailed my Jeanneau in our first pursuit race and the first race since the garden was replaced by a fresh coat of anitfouling and the rigging tuned. It was and absolute buzz.

I'm certainly not missing cruising in Greece..

Oh yeah, when I do start working at least I can chill out on the boat after work and in summer there is the Wednesday night racing and of course sailing every weekend if I desire.

The idea of a 4 week cruise once a year after flying to my boat is not so appealing at the moment.

Cruising is fine but only if you have the time to make it worth while. If you have to live in the real world for 48 to 50 weeks a year, then racing rocks

I tried that, Racing on J boats out of Sandringham Yacht club,
Not my cup of tea, I prefer just cruising,

Re: Cruising Can Be Boring

I've said it in print and I've said it in person to a lot of wannabees:"cruising ain't for everybody". The above posts bear witness to the truth of this belief.
