One of my favorites is from John Vigor's Practical Encylopedia: Don't sit in the companionway. Leave it free for ingress and egress.

A bit of wisdom, if not etiquette: leaving Miami on the way to Abaco, our skipper mentioned that if he started acting like Capt. Bligh, we were to feed him and hand him a beer.

Was the skipper diabetic?

People may have interesting reactions to commonplace things like dehydration as well.
