Cruisers with a Vehicle - Where to Park it ?
We're just about ready to begin our rather long cruising journey. We had originally planned on leaving our vehicle with a family member, but that has fallen through. We're stressed out as to where to leave the truck for the next 6+ months!
Has anyone else had a similar situation to this? I was wondering if maybe there was some concept that I hadn't yet thought of or wasn't privy to.
Suggestions would be appreciated!

many self- storage unit places have ground storage for automobiles, campers and trucks. might want to look into that.

Re: Cruisers with a Vehicle - Where to Park it ?
We stored our car in a storage yard for six months the first year. Came back to a dead battery, of course, AND mice living in the air filter! Sooo..for the next four years we let other cruisers in the harbor use it locally in exchange for watching out for it, parking permit at the marina and evacuating it from the Keys in the event of a hurricane. Now we are just going to sell it. It is like a albatross around our necks!

Some marinas and boatyards let you store your car, for a fee of course. I leave mine in the boatyard storage area when cruising. Don`t forget to disconnect the battery. Once I stored the car at Green Cove Springs. Folks there told me putting moth balls in it would prevent the critters from getting in. Forget it! The car stank of moth balls for months after I got back.

drive out of town to farm country. You can usually find a Farmer who is willing to store it on his land for next to nothing. Park it on a heavy tarp and jack it up on blocks. Then fold the ground tarp up and tie it there, and put another heavy tarp on over the top. Be sure to add fuel additive or drain the tank, and remove the battery. One of the main problems with storing a car on grass is the moisture coming off the ground rots the bottom out of the car very quickly.
I found this out with my old Honda Civic. Fantastic little car til I stored it for a year on a buddies' farm.

Put a box of rat poison in the engine compartment no matter where you store it. I get rats on my truck's engine if it sits for a week and they eat the wire insulation and the hood insulation.

To prevent the battery going dead you can buy a small solar powered charger that simply plugs into the cigarette lighter recept and keeps the battery topped off. Rodents are another issue... tarping up the vehicle makes for a nice safe secure place for them. Ocassional use prevents that in most cases.
I've even had them invade my cars and trucks here on the ranch and they only sat for a couple for weeks!

Problem with storing with strangers is that they (and your car) might not be there when you get back from cruising. Friend use to store the car with an old couple in Florida, biggest worry was that they would be gone to the cruising grounds in the sky when he returned to get his car.

I keep one in my bother-in-laws garage in MD and one in Sint Maarten in a storage garage. Both are started often while I'm away.

Re: Cruisers with a Vehicle - Where to Park it ?
We left a truck with my parents, Dad started it up once a month or so, maybe drove it some, but after 3 years we finally sold it. Now we're borrowing their old car for a couple of months (but it beats owning one ourselves). One of the reasons we kept it was we heard from "someone" that if we went uninsured then when we reentered land life with a car and insurance, we'd go back to the early 20s crowd insurance premiums. Well, with USAA we just have a non-owner liability policy with the same limits we had on the truck, that covers us when we rent cars, borrow them, etc.
To recap - sell it, especially if its a fairly longish cruise you're planning.

Re: Cruisers with a Vehicle - Where to Park it ?
We're going through the same situation; planning to store our car in L.A. before we sail. My wife wants to leave it at a friend's but I don't want to impose, so we'll be looking at storage facilities in the area. Btw, that was a good tip about the rat poison, I'll have to remember that one.
